My great grandpa on my mom side was a sergeant, he had fought in world war II in Europe and was captured by the Germans. He was held as a POW (Prisoner Of War) for nine months. He was a POW by Nazi Germany as well as during the time of the Jews camps. He had been a slave of labor to bury the bodies of jews that were executed. It had burned in his head and he would cry just from remembering it. He gained a purple heart for such. After his death a friend of his published an actual newsletter section for veterans day which I included. I also included how he looked. He had served in the army for 25 years. He also had the badge of Combat Infantry badge.

I have many other family members who are veterans on my dad's side as well. My Tio Pepe, my great grandpa Juan and my Tio Rico. Tio Rico and Great Grandpa Juan on my grandpa's side and Tio Pepe on my grandma's side all from my dad's side of the family. I know I don't have pictures of them but I do have picture of Sargent Gonzales my great grandpa. -Dalilah Esquivel

My Family Military Service

My father's family's military history began generations ago and continues today. My great-grandfather, my great-uncle, my father, my father's cousins, my uncle, my grandfather, and my sister. We have so much military history in our family, and one day I hope to visit Pearl Harbor to honor my father's great-cousin's memorial. As I get older, I am learning more about our family's service.

My father, Sgt. Joshua Hester, passed away from war injuries in 2012; my sister is currently serving in the US Navy, and one day I hope to join the Air Force.

Memorial Day and Veterans Day are close to my heart; I am thankful for all who served and are serving our country. God bless and protect them all.
