Hannah not only ensures the day-to-day research runs smoothly, but lifts the whole team through their generosity, persistence, and expertise. They go above and beyond to support colleagues, troubleshoot experiments, and step in to keep projects moving, or offer guidance.

Scientifically, Hannah has driven significant advances in the Sheffield CryoEM community. Through long, grueling days of sample optimisation, and sustained effort at the national cryoEM facility, they have developed new techniques for the Sheffield team that are now shaping the way we approach challenging structural problems.

Hannah exemplifies what a postdoc should be: a brilliant scientist, a generous mentor, and a supportive colleague who uplifts everyone around them.

Nick Groat, Arts and Humanities

Nick has been absolutely crucial to the success of my AHRC Follow On project about Place, Craft and Alcohol in Historical Perspective and is continuing with the work and to develop next steps even after the project formally ended. An archaeologist by training, Nick developed new research skills for the project (such as digital mapping and oral history), was in charge of its daily organisation, and forged an extensive set of relationships across Sheffield’s.independent business sector which are proving crucial to the project’s broader societal and economic impact. He is in many respects the model postdoc - a self-starter, quick learner, conscientious, smart, team player, thinks about the bigger picture, and passionate about the work.

Maria Petrillo, Social Sciences

Maria has been an outstanding postdoc in multiple ways, especially in terms of her engagement with policy makers and the third sector. She was awarded the UoS KE Award in 2024 for her work with Carers UK (2022-2025), cited in parliamentary debates for the Carers Leave Bill. ‘Reach statistics’ for her impact work exceeds 23 million people. In March 2025 Maria was invited to present her work to a House of Commons Policy Breakfast, and to the House of Commons Select Committee on Health and Social Care. Their subsequent report quoted extensively from her paper. Maria has also launched the first international network for quantitative researchers on social care, and has initiated and led a number of research bids. She is an outstanding colleague.

Dain Farrimond, Engineering

Dain has matured rapidly as a PGRA in four key respects.

1) The quality of his research output, including a recent paper in Proc. Roy. Soc. marked at 3.5 in a REF stocktake

2) His corresponding increased international profile, evidenced by his leading a collaboration with the excellent blast research team at Poznan University of Technology.

3) His taking on very active role in applying for and securing research funding, especially from Dstl, with whom he has developed strong connections. This has led to Dstl funding one of their senior researchers to study part time for PhD, with Dain as supervisor under my mentorship.

4) His enthusiastic involvement in managing the throughput of work at the Buxton blast laboratory

Alex has been among the few postgraduates I have heard to go above and beyond when being in charge of other students. During the supervision sessions, he always made sure all my questions are answered and I have a clear picture of the next steps plan. He was reachable at any time, and if not, he kindly suggesting me booking a meeting in his calendar. A clear difference to other postgraduates I noticed was when the discussion was going too theoretical, Alex was trying to give an additional real-life example, thus making the discussion more understandable. He didn't just helped students at a top-level but when time permitted, he also dived into lower levels of task explanations

Jade set up and runs a monthly Qualitative Club in SITraN. This has grown in size and impact and now attracts members from both inside and outside Sheffield and at a variety of levels from MSc students to grade 9. Yichen is such an integral part of our research lab, both in terms of the work he does and the wonderful person he is. His work on bird colour is what the entire lab's research is based on and all of our cool and important projects would have been impossible without the work he's done. I would like to nominate Marianna because of her contribution to solar physics, mostly centered around flare prediction, machine learning and magnetic field extrapolations in pre-flaring active regions. Apart from her research, she also serves in the chairing committee of the UK Solar Physics association and is actively involved in the outreach and communication of science activities in space weather. She is a shining example of how women, though underrepresented in STEM fields can take significant strides in research and shape our understanding of natural sciences.

Marianna is a Leverhulme Early Career RA since May 2024. Her passion for science has been an overwhelmingly positive influence on other space science members at her School.

In my experience, it is rare to find a talent such as Marianna. Her ideas have led to several key publications (e.g. Nature Physics, 2xNature Astronomy). She is leading the development of several space weather diagnostics, setting the foundations for operational forecasting. Her innovative idea shows an outstanding maturity.

Marianna has an extraordinary drive. She is very active in the research community (e.g., Deputy Chair for UK Solar Physics, member of the EDI cttee of European Astronomical Society). She received the "Women in Science" prize in 2015 in Hungary.

Lara Pereira Garcia, Science

Ben has contributed a huge amount to our project FRAM - “Flow Response of Antarctic Glaciers to Meltwater” over the last 18 months. He has planned and participated in fieldwork to Antarctica, leading data acquisition for several key instruments, and has revolutionised our ability to estimate glacier motion from sequential satellite images by making our computer code more robust and substantially more efficient, which has already led to some exciting findings. Ben is also an extremely friendly and helpful colleague, frequently going above and beyond his duties to help PhD students and other members of the Ice and Climate research group.

Marianna, a Leverhulme Fellow at EEE, conducts research at the intersection of solar physics and space weather prediction. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, including in Nature Astronomy, Nature Physics, PNAS, and other leading journals, with 19 as first author. She gives 3–4 invited talks annually, co-supervises around five PhD students, serves on editorial boards, and is Deputy Chair of the UK Solar Physics Council. She also contributes to the University’s PhD mentoring program and actively organises scientific events and public engagement.

Rebecca has only been in our lab space since the spring, but she has made a huge impact. She takes the time to help PhD students, like myself, with difficult protocols, ensuring I have what I need despite not being directly in my group. She has aided in the organisation of lab jobs for our shared space to ease the burden on everyone, as well as ensuring the spaces are well stocked. Her dedication to science is admirable. Thomas has been working on the EPSRC funded Virtual Mouse Human Twins for Osteoporosis project and has become our leader in computational musculoskeletal models and their integration with structural biomechanical models to predict the bone deformation under physiological loads. He has been brilliant in interacting with internal team members and external collaborators, and even if he has started less than one year ago, he has already performed two important sensitivity analysis studies that have been submitted or just to be submitted to international peer reviewed journals! Hector has joined the group in January 2025 and he has already made the difference in the EPSRC funded Virtual Mouse Human Twins for Osteoporosis project. He is leading the animal work bring his expertise from previous projects, and has not been scared to work out of his comfort zone and take the leadership of developing a new mouse gait lab. He has been instrumental in obtaining pilot data from murine studies that will inform the next set of experiments in the project. Sriram has joined our team last year and has been leading the experimental work in the InnovateUK funded METASTRA project. Sriram has applied his experimental mechanics skills to learn and further develop biomechanical testing for the characterization of the bone strength in vertebrae with metastatic lesions. While the project is challenging, Sriram has quickly learnt the required experimental, imaging and image processing techniques to reach the objectives of the project and we have started testing the first specimens! I am sure that these tests will lead to excellent results and major publications in international peer reviewed journals! Thank you for your hard work Sriram!
