Teaching computers to watch plants grow

Hi! I'm Mahbub, a PhD student and Research Assistant in EECS, working with Dr. Yaqoob Majeed.

This photo is from our hydroponic grow room, where we raise lettuce under LED lights with cameras mounted above the plants. We use RGB-D imaging (color plus depth) and deep learning to track how each plant grows over time, measuring its size, shape and health without ever touching it.

Why does this matter in Wyoming? Our growing season is short and the weather is tough, so indoor farming could be a big part of how we grow fresh food locally. Smarter monitoring means healthier crops, less waste, and farms that can run with fewer hands.

What I love about EECS is that it lets me work at the intersection of computer vision, robotics and agriculture on problems that feel real. Your support helps students like me keep building these tools. Thank you!
