What is it?

Flexi school is where a child receives both school and home education.

The child remains on roll.

It is the Head Teachers discretion as to whether or not they will support this for the child.

Onset tutoring remains productions obligation for the full 5 days in a week.

For children who are home schooled, production still have a legal responsibility for their educational hours as per a school day.

* As you are only able to invite crew to apply for a basic DBS check, this leaves us without the ability to check if someone is barred from working with children or vulnerable adults

* Your productions crew code of conduct invites all those contracted to work on a production to sign a shared agreement around behaviours which safeguards a production

They help productions to:

This age group is not under Local Authority Child Licensing.

However, these are still children in the eyes of the law and it is our role to ensure safeguarding is in place throughout their journey on a production.

Engage a YPC - Young Persons Chaperone with an enhanced DBS check (EG a licensed chaperone) to support them. Many productions insist now that this age group must have a YPC to also safeguard production and crew.

It records the hours worked, subjects covered and the total hours for the week, making it easier to evidence education provision and accurately aggregate tutor hours across the production.

The aim is not simply to provide education while they are on set, but to ensure they don’t return to school having fallen behind. Your tutor should have access to the child’s school information so they can plan an appropriate scheme of work.

The production’s responsibility is to ensure the child receives the correct amount of education during their time at work.

Scheduling education can feel complicated, but it becomes much easier when you work out the total education requirement across the period of the licence first. This is where aggregating a child’s hours can make a real difference.

Good planning can save time, money and tension on set.

• Calculate the education hours required across the licence period.

• Work out what education can be provided on each working day.

• Consider whether the child will return to school or receive education at their accommodation on a day off.

• Use your schedule as a starting point — it doesn’t have to be set in stone.

What can affect the tutor schedule?

• DOODs (Days of Days)

• Location and travel

• Stunts

• The child’s age

• Number of pages/scenes, can you shoot the child out?

• Whether the child can attend school

The key is to plan the education requirement before the schedule starts planning you.

*Can I choose my own?

Yes you can, when casting children advise agents that you have booked your own chaperones and tutors in line with your crew procedures. This way you have vetted them in advance and completed the same checks and balances as you would expect of your crew.

The CPSH have an ISCAT register along side our PCR Professional Crew Register - everyone works to the same production and safeguarding standards and everyone holds a current City & Guilds Children's Regulations Training Accredited Certification and NSPCC Safeguarding certificate. Free to access.

*What is their role?

Chaperones and Tutors are the ONLY member of crew who can legally undertake a "Regulated Activity".

Their role is to understand the production process, safeguard and understand the DfE child performance regulations. In line with this they need to ensure you are compliant and ready for council spot checks and keep a safeguarding audit trail ready for inspections.

* Does it have to be a parent?

No it does not, however if you choose a parent then you will require a trained chaperone to cover all of your regulatory compliance as well. Invite parents to:

• shadow your chosen licenced chaperone

• stay at unit base whilst their child travel to set

• hand over their child at unit base and return on wrap.

• Please note if the parent is also working as cast, they cannot be their child's chaperone and also if their child is working for the BBC they will not be able to be at the place of work with their child, or chaperone their child if they are a licensed chaperone.

Tutors and Chaperones are the ONLY member of crew who can legally undertake a "Regulated Activity" and replace the role of their class teachers. Their role is to contact school and create a scheme of work for the children to ensure they do not return back to school behind with their education. Tutors should also understand how to aggregate tutor hours and support productions to ensure they never fall behind.

Intimacy Coordinators are essential to any production working with children.

For children under Local Authority Licence you are looking at familial content: Parent and child who are not related.

For Young People: This age group may require an IC for both familial content and Intimacy.
