One thing I will always remember about Dr. Knoll was how she got right to the heart of the matter. She was direct, honest, and never afraid to tell me what she thought, AND always made me feel valued and seen. She had a remarkable way of making people feel that they mattered. Years after I graduated, whenever I saw her, she made me feel like it was just yesterday I was sitting in her class, and the years seemed to disappear. She had the gift of leaving a lasting impression on me that time and distance could not diminish. I feel fortunate to have known her, learned from her, and been one of the many people whose life she touched.Dawn Roy

I wasn't Dr. Knoll's student, nor was I a faculty member in her program. But I can tell you what I felt from afar :) Her former students would mention her all the time with such love and gratitude; faculty members would speak about her brilliance; and she was always so, so kind to me when I saw her at welcome back meetings or events. She has left such an incredible legacy, and I am so grateful for her impact on the Hunter College community. With love and great admiration, Gina

It has been six years since I graduated from Hunter Administration and Supervision Degree Program.

My fondest memory of Dr. Knoll is that she was always impeccably dressed and had a confidence that exuded power. Those beautiful red signature boots have left a lasting impact on my shoes selection at meetings. I have a pair of red heels. They are my power shoes. She also had a kindness that made you feel supported if you ever needed her help. From day one she expected us to be Administrators and demanded the best and nothing less from us.

I remember her saying “I want you to be better than the leaders of the past and move away from the “Got ya” generation. Most importantly she taught me to always remember my humanity as a Leader to quote her favorite phrase “Don’t tell ask”. Those simple three words are so powerful for every leader today and what I have incorporated in my experiences as a Leader.

Rest in peace Dr. Knoll good journey. You will be greatly missed. Thank you.

My heart is broken that you are not here with us in your fantastic outfits but you will always, always live in my soul. Thank you for teaching me how to do observation and feedback par excellence. You made Hunter a home on the days when I could see you on the 9th or 10th floor, come in, sit down and talk truth. Love you always my Marcia Knollster.

She was always warm and welcoming, and I loved listening to her and Kate Garnett catch up on occasional group Zooms. She served on many departmental, school and college committees, and was well-respected throughout Hunter College. Her contributions are lasting!

I met Marcia through my sister Janet many years ago and immediately felt a sisterly love for her. I knew her mostly socially and from some meetings we attended for social emotional learning. She always impressed me with the way she spoke and how she conveyed her messages - always choosing her words carefully, not only with intelligence but caring. Whenever she would see me and ask how I was I could feel she was truly interested and present to whatever I shared. Marcia and Janet had a very special friendship and it was special for me to witness the mutual love, admiration and concern they had for each other. I admired you Marcia and loved spending time with you. You left your mark on many and will remain in our hearts forever.

I knew she carried incredible experience and wisdom, and I knew that she would be supportive yet honest. David's story about Marcia's incredible capacity to listen reminded me of when we had a chat about what it means to observe our students in fieldwork. She taught me how to pose questions rather than be evaluative and that really helped me in all the subsequent years of working with new teachers. I'm just now reminded of how much she really taught me in those brief little encounters we had. Love you Marcia. We'll miss you.

Marcia I miss you! There are so many characteristics that made you such a unique and special person. Your intelligence, humor, loyalty, drive, strength, and of course style! One thing about you that always stood out to me was your eloquence. You could be in front of a large crowd in a room and when you spoke everyone listened. You could be speaking off the cuff about something, but what you said was always so clear, direct, powerful and eloquent. I remember thinking many times how I wish I could speak as well as you.

The other thing that so many people know you for is your style! Your cowboy boots and impeccable outfits. When you visited me in my dream two days after you passed to the next realm, you were wearing the boots and were dressed in a brightly colored outfit. You were vibrant and joyful! And after we talked I will never forget how my dream ended with you telling me "You need to go shopping!" Lol, always looking out for your people and making sure they are making the best impression!

Love you, Marcia! Rest in peace and joy!

With love, Jade
