Registering with your local municipality

kubatovabarus — 2026-10-01 12:33:56 UTC

If you are moving to the Netherlands for more than four months, you normally need to register with the municipality (gemeente) where you live within five days of arrival.

Contact the municipality in advance to arrange an appointment and check which documents to bring. These may include your passport or ID, proof of accommodation and birth or marriage certificates.

Your citizen service number — BSN

kubatovabarus — 2026-10-01 12:35:11 UTC

A BSN (burgerservicenummer) is your personal identification number for dealings with Dutch authorities, including healthcare and tax administration. You also need it to apply for DigiD.

You will receive a BSN when you first register with the municipality. If you already have one from a previous stay in the Netherlands, you keep the same number.

Apply for DigiD

kubatovabarus — 2026-10-01 12:35:58 UTC

DigiD is your digital identity for accessing Dutch government and other public services online.

To apply through the standard Netherlands application process, you need your BSN, your registered Dutch address and a mobile phone. An activation letter will be sent to your registered address. Activate your DigiD within 21 days.

MijnOverheid — your government mailbox

kubatovabarus — 2026-10-01 12:36:36 UTC

MijnOverheid lets you view information registered about you by Dutch authorities and receive official messages in your digital mailbox, called the Berichtenbox.

Once your DigiD is active, you can log in, set up your account and choose your preferences for receiving digital correspondence. Check your mailbox regularly for important messages.
