A Fantastic Start to Our EYFS Journey!

A very warm welcome to all of our new children and families, and a huge welcome back to all of our returning children! We are so excited to begin another wonderful year of learning, laughter, and discovery together. We are incredibly proud of how well the children have settled into their new classes and routines. They have shown great confidence, independence, and enthusiasm as they explore their learning environments, make new friends, and take part in daily activities. It has been lovely to see so many smiling faces arriving each morning, ready for a day of fun and learning. The children have adapted brilliantly to the new routines, expectations, and experiences, and have already demonstrated kindness, resilience, and a positive attitude towards learning. We would like to thank all our families for their ongoing support during this important transition. We are looking forward to a fantastic year filled with exciting opportunities, memorable experiences, and lots of achievements as we learn and grow together. This term, our topic is All About Me. We are learning about ourselves, our families, our homes, and our local area. The children are enjoying talking about what makes them special, sharing their experiences, and learning about the people and places that are important to them. Through stories, play, and exciting activities, we are building confidence, communication skills, and a sense of belonging in our classroom community. 😊🏠👨‍👩‍👧‍👦✨

Welcome back to the new academic year at St John of Jerusalem.

Year 6 have settled in well and have been challenged with building the tallest tower using only lollipop sticks, string, blu-tack and string. The collaborative effort has been amazing. Whose tower will win? We will soon find out.

As part of our Black History Art learning, Year 5 have been exploring the work of artist Kara Walker. Using tracing paper, the children carefully transferred images before creating striking black silhouettes inspired by her artwork. They showed fantastic creativity, concentration, and attention to detail, producing some wonderful pieces that they are very proud of

We have been super busy in our literacy lessons. We have been learning about the arctic explorers Matthew Henson and Ernest Shackleton. This is us role playing Matthew Henson’s childhood!

This term in Literacy, the children have been reading Princess Smartypants. They have particularly enjoyed acting out the story, which has helped to deepen their understanding of the characters and events.

through role play, the children are developing their speaking and listening skills, vocabulary, confidence and expression.

The Story of Creation

This term in Year 1/2, the children have been learning about the Christian story of Creation and exploring how we can all care for God's world. As part of their learning, the children have been creating artwork to represent different parts of the Creation story. These have come together to form a beautiful class display, which is looking fantastic! We are very proud of their thoughtful work and the care they have taken when reflecting on how we can look after God's creation.

A Hoot-tastic Week in EYFS!

Another wonderful week has flown by in EYFS! This week, we focused on the beautiful story Owl Babies and enjoyed a variety of exciting activities inspired by the book. We loved listening to and retelling the story, acting out the different characters, and talking about how the owl babies felt when their mother was away and when she returned. The children explored owls through craft activities, painting, playdough, sensory play, and creative storytelling. We also practised our early reading, writing, and maths skills through fun owl-themed challenges. It has been wonderful to see the children’s imagination, curiosity, and confidence grow as they engaged so enthusiastically with our learning. We are very proud of all their hard work this week! 🦉✨

This week we are celebrating world of work week and our focus in year 4 is showcase. We had the privilege of attending Sadler’s Wells East and we explored the building. We visited the theatre and dance studio and met the technical manager. It was great fun!

As part of world of work week, we explored being screen writers! We looked at the Shrek scene play and then created our very own Screenplay on the story ‘little red riding hood’. We are becoming aware of the importance of teamwork!

Today we are set designers! In our groups we first made a sketch of how we wanted our stage to look like. We realised the importance of including everyone’s ideas and the colours and materials we would need for our stage.

World of Work Week in EYFS

We have had an amazing and exciting World of Work Week in EYFS, giving the children the opportunity to explore a wide range of occupations and learn about the important roles people play in our community. In Nursery, the children took part in our “My First Job” topic, where they discovered what it is like to be police officers, doctors, builders and shopkeepers. They loved dressing up, helping others, building structures and taking part in imaginative role-play activities. A highlight of the week was our Postal Worker Workshop on Monday, where the children learnt how letters and parcels are delivered and enjoyed sorting, posting and delivering mail. In Reception, the children were fascinated by jobs that involve caring for the natural world, including vets, zoologists, farmers and gardeners. Through small world play, arts and crafts, storytelling, outdoor learning and hands-on activities, the children developed a deeper understanding of these occupations and the skills needed for each role. It was wonderful to see their curiosity, enthusiasm and creativity shine as they explored different careers, asked thoughtful questions and imagined what they might like to be when they grow up. World of Work Week: Building Futures!

This week, Year 3 have been busy exploring the exciting world of architecture, engineering and construction as part of our World of Work Week!

The children have been learning all about the different careers involved in designing and constructing buildings, discovering how architects, engineers and builders work together to turn ideas into reality.

On Tuesday, we were lucky enough to welcome some real-life architects and engineers into school! They shared their knowledge and expertise with the children before helping them put their new skills into practice by designing and building their very own model schools. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn from professionals and get a glimpse into the world of work!

Throughout the week, the children took part in a range of exciting building challenges, developing their creativity, teamwork, communication, problem-solving and resilience. They learned about the importance of strong structures, stable foundations and thoughtful design, as well as the need to test, adapt and improve their ideas when things don't quite go to plan!

The week ended with our ultimate engineering challenge! The children were tasked with planning, designing and constructing a tower that could withstand a hurricane... or, in our case, a very powerful fan for three whole minutes!

This challenge encouraged the children to think like real engineers, considering how to make their structures strong and stable while working collaboratively to bring their designs to life.

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, determination and imagination Year 3 have shown throughout the week. Who knows? We may have some future architects, engineers and construction experts in our classrooms!

Fantastic Forces

Our young scientists had a fantastic time visiting the Soane Centre, where they took part in an exciting Fantastic Forces workshop! Through a range of fun, hands-on experiments, the children explored how different forces work in everyday life. Working together in teams, they investigated, experimented and put their scientific thinking to the test. It was a brilliant day filled with curiosity, teamwork and exciting discoveries!

Bringing Beowulf to Life!

In Literacy, children have been exploring the epic tale of Beowulf! Through exciting drama activities, they reenacted the battle between Beowulf and Grendel, experimenting with powerful action verbs to inspire their own thrilling fight scenes!

World of Work Week!

Year 5 became budding entrepreneurs as they explored the world of ethical business! Working in teams, they assigned roles, developed their own products, selected ingredients and considered how to make their businesses ethical. To top it all off, they visited KPMG’s Canary Wharf office, where they confidently pitched their exciting business ideas to employees in a fantastic real-world experience!
