Loy Krathong Day is a festival of Southeastern Tai ethnic groups including Thailand. It falls on the 15th day of the waxing moon of the 12th month according to the Thai lunar calendar. This tradition was established as a means of eliminating bad luck and asking for forgiveness from Goddess Ganga, a Hindu deity. But the festival traces its roots back to ancient China and India.

Dan Sai, Loei Province in Thailand – June or July

Combining religious traditions, local handicrafts and fun-loving party atmosphere, Phi Ta Khon is a 3-day festival that’s renowned for the colourful masks worn by thousands of locals. The masks are ghastly, stretched faces decorated in bright, gaudy colours. The origin of the festival is a mixture of animist and Buddhist beliefs. It's supposed to recreate the legend of when a party that was so fun, everyone wanted to attend – living or dead. The Ghost Festival is held on the weekend of the 6th full moon of the lunar calendar. It usually has the main parade on the Friday (dressing up as a ghost optional), with pageants and music on the Saturday and Buddhist ceremonies on the Sunday.

Located in Dan Sai Town in Loei Province, the Ghost Festival is quite hard to get to. It’s easiest from Udon Thani (a 3-hour bus journey) or Chiang Mai (5-hour bus journey). From Bangkok, buses leave from Mo Chit Northern Bus Terminal about 5 times a day. It’s around a 7-hour journey. As Dan Sai is a small town, accommodation gets booked up quickly, so make sure you book your hotel or guesthouse early

Festival : Halloween 🎃

Halloween is a traditional celebration held on October 31st. Today, Halloween is an excuse for Halloween theme costume parties, and entertainment with horror films, haunted houses and other activities around the popular themes of ghosts, witches, Dracula, werewolves and the supernatural. Children love to dress up in Halloween costumes and go from door-to- door in their neighborhood following the old tradition of trick-or-treating, collecting sweets and gifts, sometimes money. Originally Halloween was a pagan festival, around the idea of linking the living with the dead, when contact became possible between the spirits and the physical world, and magical things were more likely to happen. Halloween is usually celebrated by both adults and kids. Some families celebrate by having costume parties and playing special games like bobbing for apples and telling ghost stories. Sometimes children go "trick or treating" - knocking on doors in their trusted neighborhoods collecting candy. Many people also make lamps out of pumpkins. They cut faces into the side and put a candle inside, then they hang them outside their houses. People used to believe that it would scare away bad spirits and ghosts. Schools usually prefer to celebrate Halloween by having children dress as storybook characters. In this way, children are still allowed to "dress up" and the holiday becomes both fun and educational.

Ghost Festival (Phi Ta Khon)

As Dan Sai is a small town, accommodation gets booked up quickly, so make sure you book your hotel or guesthouse early.
