Civics is actively participating in government/political affairs.

As citizens of the United States, we need to exercise our duty as a citizen to participate in government affairs. If one fails to do so, the government can become too powerful, and instead of acting in the interest of the people, act in the interest of themselves. I learned that if you disagree with something, then it is a person's job to express their disapproval. Simply sitting down and accepting your fate does nothing- it's the people who govern the government. I was able to understand the importance of actively partaking in politics through the assignment where we had to write a letter about someone whose participation in politics changed/helped society.

Civics is understanding that not our rights are not absolute rights.

As citizens of the United States, it is important to understand that we have many rights that are protected by the government. These rights grant us free speech, freedom of the press, and other privileges. However, it is also crucial to realize that these rights aren't absolute- if they were other rights would be infringed on. Additionally, it is vital that one realizes that, under the Constitution, the government has the right to strip people of their rights to promote the general welfare of our nation. I believe that it is important to realize this as many people seem to think that their rights are absolute- this is not the case. As a citizen of the United States, I must realize that although my rights may be stripped periodically, it is being done so in the interest of our nation.

Civics is properly recognizing and analyzing potential bias in political media.

As citizens of the United States, it is undeniable that throughout our entire lives, we will be flooded with political media. While we may dismiss the effects of these media as junk mail and claim that they do not influence our beliefs, the unsettling truth is that they can have potent and unconscious effects on our beliefs. Without even knowing, seeing a mocking political cartoon of some candidate could influence our opinions of the candidate. Thus, people need to be able to identify biases to prevent them from falsely influencing their beliefs because every political medium is published with a purpose, and often authors use bias to achieve this purpose. The assignment, which required me to analyze a political cartoon, helped me understand this importance. As I analyzed a cartoon mocking Joe Biden, I realized how biased and misleading the comic's message was as it falsely blamed him for the collapse of several large banks.

Civics is understanding the structure of our court system.

Though we never expect it to happen to us, it could happen to us at any point. We could be sent to court over anything, whether it be for an accused crime or some other lawsuit. It's important for us to understand that the trial will first take place at a county level and then if I want I can attempt to make an appeal to the state court. If that doesn't work then I can attempt to appeal at the national level through the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court can then induce in a process called judicial review where they review the law by comparing it to the Constitution. However, it's not always possible to make an appeal, there has to be merit in order to do so. The assignment in which we looked at real life examples of judicial review and appeals to the Supreme Court helped me to understand this decision because I got to see actual occurrences and understand how the process worked.

Advice for future students

My best advice for future students is to never fall behind in work. The work is fairly easy and takes no more than two hours each week IF you complete the assigned work on time. When you start slacking and falling behind, you begin to struggle in class. In order to avoid this, I recommend setting a designated time for which your work must be done. For me, this was Sunday at around 5 PM. If the work were not done by then, I would put everything else down and ensure that the work was completed. Set deadlines, and follow them!
