Takeaway #1 The Transformational Matrix

The Transformational Matrix has four categories of potential curriculum upgrade, each category has its own degree of impact and engagement on student learning.
1. Conform--> low impact on learning and engagement. Teachers do most of the work!

2. Outform--> low impact on learning but high level of student engagement. Students are having fun, but not really learning anything.

3. Reform--> High impact on learning but low impact of student engagement. Students know what they are doing, and are learning, but they are not enjoying it!

4. Transform--> high impact on learning and engagement. This is where you want to be! It is harder to achieve but the students are in charge of their learning and engaged.

Takeaway #2 SAMR Continuum Model

It is important to realize by upgrading your curriculum, you are not merely enhancing it, but transforming it! The SAMR model puts enhancement and transforming curriculum at separate ends. In order to graduate to transforming curriculum, you need to know about automating, informating, and amplifying.

· Automating is close to enhancement and it is simply utilizing technology but the teacher is still in control of both learning and teaching.

· Informating is more engaging for the students. Students have more control of the technology and the information they learn, and then share what they learn.

· Amplifying is broadcasting students’ voices to a local or global audience. Does not have an endpoint!

Takeaway #3 Appraising and Brainstorming

Do not be overwhelmed! Curriculum transformation is best accomplished gradually, one unit at a time or a series of lessons. Start by picking a lens to incorporate, know which standards need to be considered, choose units that would benefit from technology use, consider what units encourage the most student ownership, think of your school or districts action plans. Now it is time to brainstorm.

Once the unit to upgrade has been chosen, time to collaboratively brainstorm! Keep in mind orbits of ability, what technology and tools will promote informating and amplifying and will the upgrade affect the unit of study?
