The government tend to focus more on the people, unlike other government where you have to vote for someones decisions you believe in. I think that this is important because people like to feel like they are making choices and have the ability to change something that they do not like. If a citizen in a direct democracy does not like the way a senator (or other person from another position) is representing them, the next election they will choose a senator (or other person for another position) who will represent them the way they want to be represented. Though this may not be the senator (or other person for another position) that is chosen in the end, at least they know that they had a say in what they wanted the outcome to be. If a citizen lives in a republic democracy they have a say in everything that the government needs a vote on. These people will be able to make their own choices on each matter which means that they know that they are valued in the government.
