The site is being slowly eroded by tourists' feet. Unorganized urban growth in the area is also present with human waste pumped direct into the Urubamba river. Aguas Calientes has mushroomed in size as more hotels and restaurants have been built to accommodate the needs of tourists, and the burden is evident in the heaps of garbage piled along the banks of the Urubamba river. Helicopters have been allowed to fly in tourists and operate low-flying tours, thereby disturbing not only the peaceful quality of the ruins, but potentially damaging them. Peru's Institute of Natural Resources said those flights led to the disappearance of a rare species of orchid and the Andean Condor from the area. The site is temporarily closed because of the damages.

As the economic importance of tourism increases, it is important to consider the effects that tourism has on the environment in the affected regions of the country. In our study, we selected two popular tourist destinations in Japan, Tokyo and Kyoto, for our case studies on the repercussion effects induced by the economic and environmental activities of visitors. As waste generation and landfilling are two of the most important environmental loads in Japan, a regional waste input–output approach was considered to be an effective method for evaluating these issues. The estimated direct effects of visitors’ consumption activities in Tokyo and Kyoto amounted to approximately 434 billion yen and 209 billion yen, respectively. The tendencies of visitor consumption in both prefectures were similar, as were the repercussion effects on the production value, which accounted for approximately 434 billion yen and approximately 260 billion yen in Tokyo and Kyoto, respectively. Value added amounted to 276 billion yen in Tokyo and approximately 108 billion yen in Kyoto. Waste generation induced by tourists in Kyoto accounted for approximately 22,690 t, which was similar to that induced in Tokyo at 20,655 t. Regarding the repercussion effect of the area of landfill consumption, Kyoto tourists consumed 1479 m2 of landfill in contrast to 7369 m2 in Tokyo.

The canyon's cameos in pop culture have made it a popular travel destination for tourists, but the influx of travelers to the site has badly damaged it environmentally, prompting a visitors ban.

The Environment Agency of Iceland reports that about one million people have visited the site since the music video. They expect even more, despite the ban recently implemented by environmentalists, which hasn't discouraged visitors from going. Decades of overtourism to Giza has contributed to irreparable damage to these magnificent ancient monuments. Although the structure itself is made of stone, it is not impermeable to damage, and many individuals have selfishly decided to break off a piece of the monument for themselves as a keepsake. The stone formation is now roped off and can only be admired from a distance, but that hasn’t stopped some particularly scummy people from crossing over anyway. Several busy roads have also been placed nearby that also threaten the structure.

Antarctica is a particularly heartbreaking instance because it is not just one monument that is under threat but an entire continent. Additionally, with the current state of global climate change, the future of this breathtaking location remains unknown.

Known for their host of endemic species and substantial biodiversity, which notably aided in Charles Darwins’ development of the Theory of Natural Selection, the ecosystems and habitats within the Galápagos Islands are incredibly fragile. Of course, with such a unique assortment of wildlife, the islands have attracted the attention of many tourists over the years. The wildlife has been placed in such a vulnerable position that UNESCO placed the Galápagos on its World Heritage in Danger List in 2007. As a means of preserving the land and its inhabitants, a variety of sanctions have been implemented, including the requirement that all tourists and visitors be accompanied by a licensed guide when they visit the national park.
