Miller was an award winning novelist, screen wright, and author. He was known for his beliefs regarding McCarthyism and Communism. He wrote the play in response to having friends who were under investigation and denounced the rough treatment of anyone considered Communist. The play is based around a group of girls who are accused of being witches, a man caught up in affairs with one of them, and the town's response to hearing about all of this. The word "crucible" in this case means a trial or difficult test.
