One of the main problems for people in poverty was their housing. The housing was dangerous, unsanitary, and crowded, which made living very terrible and hard for the people living in the housing. This was especially bad in places like New York.

Poverty-stricken people were uneducated, and many immigrants didn't know how to speak English. There were 15 million immigrants that came into the US during the Progressive Era, and the majority didn't know how to speak English.

Jacob A. Riis created the book How The Other Half Lives. In this book he includes photos of the housing, and these photos show how over all terrible the housing is, and it brings attention; with that attention eventually comes change.

Jane Addams created a settlement home known as the Hull House with her friend Ellen Starr. This house along with other settlement housing gave people in their community education such as English classes, child care, and classes that taught people how to work different jobs.

Medicare covers most medical expenses for people that are 65 and older. For example, they cover the expenses of people staying in a hospital for treatment. They also cover medical supplies needed for the person, but Medicare does not cover long-term care.

After there is a disaster that prevents people from getting basic necessities the Red Cross sends volunteers to give food, water, and to build shelters for people all over the world.

People can't afford health care for themselves and/or their family.

People and Families don't have enough money to feed, cloth, or own a house. Especially after some form of a disaster that makes people's lives worse like hurricanes and earthquakes.
