the reason we measure the timeline is so if we find artifacts we can know what timeline it's from and it makes it easier to find out what the artifact is used for.

We measure time to date back from the past. To know when the past happens. To know the season. Because it could be a holiday or if it could be an important date. We keep track of the year if something important does happen that year it will be a historical moment for the year.
