Stage 1: Trust Vs Mistrust

Trust Vs Mistrust is the very first stage that we all go through, it is the start of feeling safe and secure, it is what shapes how you feel about the world at such a young age.

When I was born both of my parents were fairly young and did not have college educations, therefore they were both working full time jobs. I was lucky enough to have both of my grandparents really close to us and my uncle who was still living with my grandmother at the time. They would all take turn spending time with me and making sure that I was taken care of while my parents were gone. They were all able to help me feel safe and find trust in the world through them.

The book states that this stage is when a "baby develops a sense of if the world is a good and safe place" ch1. By this definition I do believe that I have completed this stage and landed on the trust side. I had a lot of people looking out for me and they were all there to make sure I had trust in the world.

Stage 3: Initiative Vs Guilt

The initiative Vs Guilt stage is when younger kids start to take initiative and make decisions without feeling a sense of guilt. Although the guilt may come into play if a person were to shame them for the decision that they had made.

When I was six years old I had an older brother who was eight and a younger brother who was four, neither of them would ever want to play with my so I would play with my cousin who lived down the street or with my father. I was always the one who would assign the roles for the dolls and the person who was playing with me. This helped me to take initiative in situations.

The book describes this stage as the child "taking initiative without feeling any guilt". I think that I was able to complete this stage but only to a certain degree. I often at the age I am right now feel guilty about the decisions that I make when taking initiative. I am not exactly sure why this is, it may be due to me being criticized for the initiative that I had taken before.

Stage 4: Industry Vs Inferiority

Industry v inferiority is one of the most important stages in my opinion. This stage is the stage that is helping us start to understand confidence and it is leading us to be a good member of society.
In third grade I was having a really hard time with my spelling tests, and I was frequently getting grades of C's and D's. I Started to study the list of words that my teacher gave us every day after school. I ended up started to get better grades on all my spelling tests, and my teacher told me how proud she was of the progress I had made.

Having one of my teachers and my parents who I both looked up to be proud of me fro the progress I had made, added to my confidence level and let me gain the confidence that I needed to be successful. The book says "A child must feel skills of the culture or face incompetence" Knowing that I was at the same stage as many of the other kids gave me the understanding of this culture.

The Identity Vs Identity Confusion stage is a rather large stage in someones life. This is the stage where you are supposed to start understanding who your are and where you fit in as a person.

I was able to find the resolution to my stage of Identity Vs Identity confusion when I reached my final year of High School. All through school I did not have very many good friends and never felt like I belonged, That is until I figured out what I wanted to do with my life. This gave me a sense of self, and made me feel like I had a direction to go in rather than just floating around.

The book puts in large letters the question of "Who am I". This question is one that everyone asks themselves at one point, but I have been able to find resolve to this and I ended up on the Identity side. It took me a while to understand who I am and who I want to be but after four long years of Highs School, and questioning what I want to be I have finally understood.

Intimacy Vs Isolation is the stage that I am currently in. This stage is where people are either looking for new relationships and creating stronger ones or they have isolated themselves from doing this.
I have started to look for deeper relationships with people, and I believe that this is due to me becoming a more mature person, but I also see myself becoming an isolated person. I have always been someone who would prefer to be alone and focus on themselves rather than have to try and focus on a lot of other people at the same time. The book states that in the emerging adulthood stage "it is marked by the exploration of ones self" pg 113. I am not sure where I will end up when I complete this stage but I hope I am happy when I do.

This stage consists of children being able to make choices for themselves that are physical choices they can control, without feeling any doubt.

As a three year old I was always wanting to dress myself and most of the time my outfits were not matching. This gave me the ability to have Autonomy and not feel any doubt about what I was wearing because my mother was very open to letting me choose my clothes. She may have given me a guiding hand to help me understand how to match clothes, but she never told me that I could not wear what I had chosen.

I was able to complete this stage by accomplishing the "balance between independence and self sufficiency" I knew what I wanted to wear and instead of feeling doubt I was able to make an outfit and feel comfortable.

Generativity vs Stagnation is the stage where you are more towards the middle of your life, and you are wanting to feel fulfilled with what you are doing.

I have not yet reached this stage but I do believe that I will be able to resolve this crisis with Generativity. I plan on becoming an elementary school teacher, which will help me reach this resolve. The book says that "The mature adult is concerned with guiding the next generation" I don't think I will ever fall into stagnation because of what my chosen profession is.

The stage of Integrity Vs Despair is the stage of accepting your life and being content with the fact that you have lived or struggling with the knowledge that you will not be able to have your life again after you pass.

Although I have not reached this stage yet I feel as if I will struggle for a really long time to accept that fact that I have lived and won't be able to do it again. I think I will be able to find resolve when I realize that I am not the only one who feels like this and that in reality I am content with my life as it has played out.

The book says that you need to "achieve the acceptance of death" and it feels as if you yourself are going through the stages of grief in order to get to the accepting point. But once I find that I am content I will be able to have the resolve of integrity.
