This year, as a Visual and Digital Art Certificate student, I have created artworks with various media, from 18 by 24 inches 2D drawing to 132 px by 102 px –which is about 0.44 x 0.34 inches in the real world– digital drawing. A lot of my inspiration this year was from the sky, stars, and space; I experimented with different mediums; Doodle 4 Google; pixel art; and printmaking; to experiment with different mediums to portray the sky and stars.
Doodle 4 Google artwork I titled “Gems Under the Starlight” was made with procreate. It depicts the navy sky with numerous stars and a purple milky way. It has cloud-like textures and abundant small stars, making the sky a little blurry and giving it a soft texture.
Pixel art was something I was interested in for a long time. I drew an astronomer and a planet in the universe with a gradation of the sky from dark purple to mint green. In contrast to the Doodle 4 Google artwork with procreate, pixel art has the hard texture remaining in the background. To experiment with the sky more, I added purple and blue aurora lights to the middle and the bottom of the drawing. It was difficult to express the uniqueness of nature with hard pixels, but I like the playfulness pixels can show, and I want to explore more about pixel arts.
Not only did I experiment with digital art, but I also created visual works that portray the sky.
The printmaking project required me a longer time than other projects since it was not a familiar form of art to me. The artwork illustrates the starry sky and a wolf howling at the sky. I first printed it with green ink and painted it over with watercolor and gouache to make the base color blue and to add purple lights. I used a toothbrush to splatter and create tiny stars. Although I painted thick over the printmaking ink, I still see the remaining marks of a tarleton cloth, which makes it different from smooth digital arts.

I like how the different mediums can express the same thing uniquely and would like to expand my use of various media.

Journey - Rina Doyama'23

My wish to create playful artwork led me to pixel art. Pixel works have always entertained me in many forms, especially video games, such as Minecraft. The hard texture adds the aurora lights movements that cannot be done by smooth lines, and I enjoyed creating this pixel art that expanded my techniques to draw my favorite things, particularly sky and stars.

Nostalgia - Rina Doyama'23

I experimented with a halftone filter in Photoshop. It depicts Ramune soda, a traditional Japanese drink, which the taste takes me back to my childhood memories in Japan. Halftone is fascinating because it looks like a normal drawing from a far distance but actually is a pattern of dots. The style reminds me of classic comic books, and I would like to explore more with this technique to integrate the pop and retro style with the soft and modernized one.

Envy - Rina Doyama'23

This piece is a digital portrait of a girl looking on Instagram. I was inspired by some books I read this year, which reminded me of the downsides of social media. While social media connects people all over the world, it can make one’s life less agreeable by comparing one’s life to those of others. It was my first time painting a realistic person, and I was intrigued by how just adding shadows and highlights can make a painting dimensioned.
