Counter-argues the suggestion that the Star served as the voice of the people, instead it created it.
'New Journalism' is problematic - resulted in the aim of the press being the number of sales (Alfred Harmsworth's 'get me a murder a day') as opposed to reporting events with factual accuracy.
With relation to the Whitechapel Murders, the vast press coverage proved to be a hinderance and resulted in sensationalised coverage of the murders and likely contributed / was behind some of the letters sent to the police with people claiming they were 'Jack'.

Disagree with Soph's argument.
Media coverage on Whitechapel murders integrates wider social and moral issues (poverty, policing, immigration etc)
Need to recognise that prostitution is / was a problem in East End - women not fulfilling societal expectations
British culture admired / praised by many other countries in light of the British Empire
Media / Press did hinder police investigation in the murders, but proved beneficial in spreading awareness and uniting the nation on societal ills such as prostitution.

Agree to an extent with Kerry. Again emphasise the newspapers as a tool for manipulation. Drawing on ideas of patriarchy to understand why prostitutes where so heavily condemned in Victorian society. The link of prostitution to the independent female defies Victorian morals and way of life. Argue that this denomination of prostitutes in the newspapers re-enforces the patriarchy structure of Victorian society. Use Venereal Diseases Acts as example - 'the C.D acfs reflect this view of the social underclass as degraded and powerless, yet potentially threatening and disloyal'- Walkowitz
