Just as the air we breathe and the food we need to nourish our bodies sex also fulfills an emotional or physical need or desire. As long as there is a need for a service a supply will surface whether in a legal or illegal manner. Society assumes that those who work in the sex industry are there by choice. While this is true that some are there of their own free will; but many are not. We have a duty morally to protect our children and our communities. By legalizing and regulating the sex work industry we can reduce the demand for underground sex trafficking and allow those who are captured to be identified and not prosecuted with the option of a future untainted by a circumstance they could not control.

According to Stern (2015) by focusing ire and police scrutiny on already stigmatized populations—prostitutes, immigrants, homosexuals, drug users—authorities may have worsened the epidemic. The “criminalization of ‘knowing’ exposure,” Irvine wrote, “is likely to steer prostitutes away from voluntary testing, since the results may make the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony charge.” The philosophy and practice of policing the sex lives of stigmatized groups has a long history and has always produced dispiriting results. In the United States, it is inescapably part of the long American Plan.

Stern, S. W. (2015).

According to Scholl (2012) “The Bible suggests that judgment and punishment are not the correct response to sex work. The writer of the book of Hosea says, I will not punish your daughters when they play the whore, nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery; for the men themselves go aside with whores, and sacrifice with temple prostitutes; thus, a people without understanding comes to ruin. (Hosea 4:14)”

Scholl (2012) went further to state, “This verse suggests that our response should be one of understanding— of both the forces that lead women into sex work and the way the sex industry works— not so much to close the industry down but to make sure that every person in the sex industry has choices.”

Scholl, L.
