1.         Pepsi drink is a good example of the FFF principle since the primary aim function (medical purpose) of the product has been completely shifted to another function (enjoyable refreshment), which resulted in being an amazing creative innovation.

2.         What I liked about the Pepsi invention is that instead of throwing the product away after seeing that there was no concrete medical effect, they tried to alternate it by removing some components and turned it into a really nice drink.

-               Therefore, the final version of Pepsi ended up being a really nice drink that everybody can take as a refreshment.   

-               The product can be really easily ruined since we can just let the Pepsi bottle open for a while in order for the gas to evaporate and thus the product will loose its enjoyable taste. 

-               From this point, we could use the Pepsi for many different purposes, for example it can serves as a way to supercharge the compost. The sugar in the Pepsi can help speed up the compost by feeding micro organisms and the acidity in the Pepsi will help the compost to break down faster. This is an effective way of using the same product for another function and it will certainly become popular since Pepsi is accessible to everyone and that could really help firms to grow their plants/fruits/vegetables faster for a really affordable price. 

 

Saccharin, is a synthetic sweetener that was discovered accidentally in 1897 by a Johns Hopkins University researcher. Synthetic sweeteners seem like a miracle food. They require no land for growing, no smoke-belching refineries, and most of them pass through your body un-metabolized, which is what makes them zero-calorie and safe for diabetics, since they don’t affect blood sugar levels. 

 

The researcher was looking for new uses for coal tar derivatives. The work interested him so much he forgot about his supper until late, then rushed off for a meal with his hands all still covered in laboratory goo. He forgot to wash his hands before food and tasted something sweet on his fingers. After tasting everything in his lab to determine the source, he figured out it was benzoic sulfimide, a coal tar derivative that is 300 times sweeter than sugar. 

 

By 1907, saccharin was already widely used in sodas and canned goods, but most Americans had no idea it was in their food. As part of a series of sweeping food and drug reforms, Harvey Wiley, the head of the chemical division of the United States Department of Agriculture, recommended banning saccharin for possibly being toxic. The person who got in his way was President Theodore Roosevelt, who was on a weight-loss regimen that included a dose of saccharin prescribed by his doctor.

The sweetener was eventually banned in 1912, but the decision was reversed during World War I, when sugar rations necessitated the use of saccharin as a substitute. Once the war was over, people continued to enjoy the calorie-free sweetener.

 

In this particular case, I chose to analyse not a business, rather an invention. The example follows the FFF principal. The researcher wasn’t looking for a sweetener that diabetics can use, he discovered it by complete accident, by making a curtail mistake in the lab, by not washing his hands. The ruined product was considered toxic, however the outlying benefits of the calorie-free sweetener sparked an idea and it revolutionised the way diabetics can consume sugar.
