Donatello was born in 1386 or 1837 the exact year is unknown. Donatello was born in Florence, Italy. He died December 13, 1466 at the age of 80. His birth names was Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi, but he is more commonly known as Donatello. His parents were Orsa Bardi, and Niccolo di Betto Bardi. He influenced other famous Renaissance artists known as Michelangelo, Masaccio, and Bernardo Rossellino. He specialized in sculptures made with marble, bronze, and wood. (H.W. Janson)

The Penitent Magdalene is a wooden sculpture carved from white poplar wood during 1453-1455. It is a carving of the biblical figure Mary Magdalene. This image of Mary is perceived to be ugly and old. Donatello sculpted her this way because he wants her to be perceived as an adulter, which caused her to loose her youth and beauty. Donatello created this sculpture after suffering from a long illness in Padua, Italy. Donatellos own suffering could have influenced the way he made Mary. Donatello was considered as one of the greatest sculptors, considering he played and merged new techniques, experimented with many different kinds of materials. Not only that, he stopped doing the gothic style and started focusing more on human anatomy/proportions and realism. He learned how to sculpt greatly with marble, wood and bronze which inspired other people (Theartstory).
