Submitted by: Andy Chen Yang (UT EID: acy284)

I found this article online and thought it was really interesting because it really highlights how powerful being able to find relevant and transferable skills are to keeping up-to-date with the latest trends and changes in the different careers with the improvements in technology and other innovations. For instance, you may currently know how to use a certain piece of software, but in a year or two, a new piece of software will be released that you have to learn all over again. It is essentially very important to future proof your skills by staying relevant with current technologies and finding ways of utilizing skills that do not have an immediate expiration date. The author makes great points on being able to both develop applicable skills to industry rather than pure study skills as well as grow one's network by connecting with people of both similar and varied interests in industry. I definitely agree that it is important to network with people of different backgrounds because it ultimately is who you know who defines your growth and success in a career rather than what you know. I believe that these two skills are essential to optimize one's career path in any industry going forward, and it would be really useful to apply these skills into the real world going forward.

This article highlights some common mistakes that college students encounter when looking for a job. The first, simply applying to more jobs, while simple is incredibly important from a purely statistical perspective, putting students in a better position for ultimate success. The point that I want to echo the most is the importance of networking and doing more than simply applying on a company's website for a position. I got my own internship primarily through connecting with a recruiter through an introduction of a friend who worked at the company last summer. This not only substantially sped up the recruiting process, but made me more relaxed because I could put a face to the organization and have an open conversation about why I wanted the position and was qualified for it.

This article provides a few tips on writing effective resumes. Resume crafting is an incredibly important skill for all of us, regardless of if we plan on going into the workforce, graduate school, or some other occupation following graduation. I also identify with this article because in my job as a student recruiter for the McCombs honors program, I routinely tell hopeful students this same information. Specifically, the importance of quantifying as much as possible: the person looking at resumes probably sees lots of club founders or presidents, so the title itself does not mean much. But, if the applicant can quantify what they've done (like "Organized a food drive that raised 1000 pounds of food for the local homeless shelter") it gives the recruiter a more tangible sense of the applicants abilities and accomplishments. These are timeless tips, and mastering them can provide a big boost in our recruiting effectiveness

Third, would be fitness. Finally, would be "emotional resemblance" of your facial features.

We have learned most of the tips through our lectures, thus I have picked some tips that we have not learn or those that I have nerve learned. The most amusing tips for interviews is to not smile too much. According to some researchers if one smiles too much it can undermine their success in a job interview. Another tip that we know which is to ask your interviewee a question before you leave, but you should also ask them why they brought you in for an interview. By asking that question you draw the interviewee to talk about your strength.

The author makes an interesting point pertaining to the role predicted happiness plays in choosing a career. While he makes it clear that you should be happy with your given career, he explains that humans are often very bad at predicting their future happiness. Thus, we cannot merely choose a career that we think will make us happy, because it very well might not make us happy in reality. We also have to consider, according to this article, the opportunities the career will provide us to grow, the stability it will provide, and the motivation that will arise from the given career choice. I liked this article because it made it a point to convey the practical aspects that go into choosing a career, and not just the emotional aspects we are often trying to fulfill.

This article is so important when dealing with careers. It stresses the importance of being patient and not setting your expectations too high. As college students at a very prestigious University, we all set very high standards for ourselves and want to achieve everything as fast as we can. However, this article reveals that this is hurtful to us psychologically. We must be patient with ourselves and allow life to steer us in the right direction. We have our whole lives ahead of us. We also need to lower our standards and be more reasonable, as this will limit disappointment and result in our well being rising. The articles states... "rather than twiddle your thumbs expecting everything good to happen right now, be patient that things will happen at the right moment, when you’ve put in the right amount of effort." This is so important to realize as college students and provides a very wise insight to live by.

The one that really caught my eye reads, "It's not what you achieve, it's what you overcome. That's what defines your career." This essentially means that there will be obstacles in choosing and maintaining a career, but these obstacles are ultimately what define you. It is ok to not always be successful, but it is important to learn from these mistakes. Your achievements are also important, however, what is really important is the things that are hard and take time to overcome that really matter.
