There are various factors which influence the modification or enhancement of workplace laws based on legislative initiative, social change, or judicial rulings.
- The overall goal of equal employment opportunity regulation is to protect people from unfair or inappropriate discrimination in the workplace. Most laws which have been passed, however don't explicitly define the term itself.
-Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 - States that it is illegal for an employer to fail or refuse to hire, to discharge any individual, or to discriminate in any other way against any individual with respect to any aspect of the employment relationship on the basis of that individual's race, color, religion, sex, or nationality.
-Equal pay act of 1963 - requires equal pay for men and women who are doing the same work.
-The Age Discrimination and Employment Act (ADEA) - prohibits discrimination of employees 40 or older.
-Americans with disabilities act of 1990- protects employment opportunities and the discrimination of people with disabilities.

-An organization's purpose is its basic reason for existing.
-An organization's mission is how its managers have decided to fulfill its purpose. A mission statement shows how the organization intends to manage itself so it can pursue the fulfillment of its purpose most effectively
-The significance of employees knowing an organization's intended purpose is imperative to the organization's overall goals, as having employees with similar goals as the organization they're working in will make the employee work in a manner that is both productive and efficient.

When it comes to measuring the performance of an individual, it is important to notice trends in ones work/productivity, and to address issues which certain employees must improve upon. Developing an evaluation plan which observes the duties and obligations of an employee is essential in having a productive organization. Employees have specific roles to fulfill within their organization, in order for the company to reach success. Knowing which employees are performing up to par, and which ones are falling behind, is crucial for when it comes to layoffs (if necessary) and the overall development of an employee.

How to properly create a job description

When creating a job description for hiring new employees, it is important to take into consideration a few different things. One is to address the function of the organization in which the candidate may be working for. This will let the possible new employee know what the organization's goals are, and how the culture of the workplace is. Second is to address the role of the job that one will be taking. This should be a generic description of what the job will consist of and which department the employee will be in. The last thing which should be on the job description should be each individual duty which the employee will be performing. This will be more detailed, as it will list the specific obligations the employee must fulfill.

Employee engagement directly correlates with employee retention and motivation

Employees must be content with their job position and work atmosphere. The importance of an employee being satisfied with his/her job should be taken into account in regards to HR. Employees are very unmotivated and disengaged nowadays according to statistics. In order to improve employee engagement and employee retention, there are a few things an organization can do. One things is a reward/recognition system, in which higher performing employees will be recognized for their hard work and contribution to the organization. Another is on-boarding/orientation, which is done prior to hiring a new employee. This let's them get used to the work atmosphere and culture, and let's them know what is expected of them in the company. When an employee feels comfortable within an organization, they are more likely to stay in that job position for a long time. One last way to engage employees more is having social events with co-workers periodically, in which everyone's work ethic will be addressed and given recognition.

How employees and managers alike collide

When taking into consideration how a manager speaks of another employee, it is important to take the perspective of both the employee and manager. Through a past QSS assignment, it was addressed that the employee was not obliging his manager in the best interest of the organization as a whole. The manager was advising the employee to bypass certain safety procedures, just to fulfill his own selfish desires of meeting certain deadlines quickly. This is not acceptable in an organization, as everyone should be working towards improving the company and listening to standard protocol. All employees must adhere to company policy no matter where they rank.

When an employee is being laid off, it is important to consider the value of that employee, and how it would impact the organization if they were to be let go. Performance evaluations and past behaviors should be strongly taken into account when considering which employee is the weakest link and must be laid off. Laying off an employee also requires a good use of vocabulary, as it is important to let the employee know that they are still of value to the company and may want them back in the future. The actual laying off of an individual should be conducted by no other than HR, as managers are also likely to be laid off and should be evaluated by the HR department of any organization.

A labor union is an organized association of workers, often in a trade or profession, formed to protect and further their rights and interests. When unions are formed, it is often because multiple employees are dissatisfied with a certain aspect of the job. Joining a union can allow employees to get their word out, and addressing certain issues which are impacting the productivity of employees. Unions were formed during the industrial revolution, when unbearable working conditions, low paying wages, and child labor was prominent.

Many organizations may be male dominated, female dominated, or even have a mixture of both genders equally. The problem of sexual harassment comes into effect when one party feels uncomfortable from the actions or words of another party. When bringing this issue to court, is important to provide physical evidence if possible, as sexual harassment cases tend to be overlooked. In order for workplaces to avoid this, there should be films shown to employees regarding this issue, and making employees know that there is no tolerance in showing sexual behaviors at work.

Giving and receiving feedback in the workplace is imperative to correcting weaknesses

Employees are often evaluated on how they perform. When an employee's weaknesses are addressed, it gives them the chance to better themselves and show one's true potential in the workplace. Having a criteria which makes up the foundation of the feedback being given to the employee is crucial towards targeting weak areas of an individual. Employee-employer feedback is also necessary. A manager may be lacking in some areas, which may have an impact on employee retention. Before bashing an employee based on certain allegations from managers, it is crucial to hear the employee's side of the story as well. Hence, feedback should be given to managers and supervisors alike.
