"Writing to learn takes the students from passive learner to active learners through exploration of content. WTL is an informal practice whereas LTW is more formal because you are teaching students how to develop a product. As history teachers, we are responsible for both. We have to teach students the process of writing a historical paper (writing a thesis, finding unbiased resources, analyze history, etc.) One way we would implement this is through character journal. Students would write a journal based on content knowledge, in the perspective of a character they create. " -GW, 1797

WTL is students exploring what they are writing about. It gives them the opportunity to investigate the content, and is usually not graded. LTW is showing students how to write like an expert. How to write like an historian. In our classroom we are responsible for both of these, but can lean more towards WTL. LTW is also important in our classroom though because it teaches the students how to write like an historian. Ways to implement the strategies for WTL in a history class would be to have the students complete a POVG about a major historical figure or group, or write an unsent letter from the perspective of an allied soldier in world war II.

In our SS content field we are responsible for both.
Main Diff:
WTL- not to be "pretty" i.e. writing to learn to content through exploration in the content field
LTW- teaching different styles e.g. writing like a historian for SS content. Learning the different techniques e.g. cause & effect.
Implementation:
LTW- can give presentation on how to setup an essay through outline exercise.
WTL- through warm-up exercises which forces students to investigate the topic through writing. This is in informal exercise. E.g. What was MLK Jr's reason for giving the "I have a dream speech".

With write to learn this consists of giving the students an activity. This activity would not be for a grade but to see where the students struggle with your content lessons. The teacher could see where they need to break down sections for the student. Learn to write would be when the teacher teaches the students how to write about their content or questions dealing with the lesson. whatever the final product is, this would let the teacher see what they are going to implement in their learn to write activity. In our art class we would implement both techniques. We would see where the students are struggling with writing about art. The learn to write portion would be the art teacher helping the students learn how to properly write about artwork.

Writing to Learn is for the students' self discovery and exploration. Learning to write is providing students' the "template" or "recipe" for how to write. In a choir, students at the highschool level could learn about fundamental functional harmony. Students do not need to to be in choir or a music organization to explore writing music, however as educated musicians we can easily make time to give students the fundamental tools to write an organized composition. After teaching
