Implementing effective career counseling by EUN Partnership aisbl

Think about your role as a primary or secondary teacher and your interactions with gifted students in terms of their aspirations and future paths. Reflect on the following questions: Have you come across students who found it challenging to decide on future careers because of their diverse interests or high standards? How have you previously assisted gifted students in exploring potential career paths? Can you recall any difficulties you've encountered while offering suitable career guidance to gifted students? Considering the context of younger students, ponder these questions to enhance your understanding of nurturing their potential and guiding them effectively toward their future endeavors. Based on your reflections, identify specific areas where your current approach to supporting gifted students' career exploration may be improved. Consider the challenges highlighted in the text and how they might relate to your own teaching context.

Also, we try to find which career is best for future employment and what professions are most wanted at labor market. this also helps to narrow the choice.

At my school the counselor is the person in charge of helping students choose their career. However, our role as teachers and our comments and outlooks on making choices might be determining for some students. One of my strengths is to transmit calm in stressful situations. I am not an expert but I always tell my students (specially those who have trouble choosing because they excel in different areas) that we don’t make that many mistakes. That we choose based on what we know and feel know. To trust their guts and go for the next step with optimism. And if later they see that they need to do something different, it is possible to change directions. And that is ok. And also, I try to make them understand choosing a path not always implies abandoning everything else. You can have different interests from those related to your career and still learn about them, get involved, develop your knowledge. All in all, I believe we need to lower the level of anxiety when it comes to make choices. There is not just one right path to choose. And life is more flexible than we think.

Usually I am not involved in carreer counselling. However, I suggest that they choose a field of work that makes them happy. If they are happy with what they are doing they have more chances to become successful. On the other hand gifted pupils feel more pressured to succeed because of their family and friends' high expectations. We should make them less stressed and confident on their capabilities. Most probably they will succeed in whatever they will decide to do.
