In society, AT THE TIME OK!, it was considered normal for a man to be considered superior than a woman

this can be seen in the text, with the constant diminishing of Nora's character, and the use of playful words of Torvald towards her. Torvald considers himself a lot, and says for example: "That was quite a bright idea of mine". We can see that he believes and values that he is superior to his wife, which ultimately relates to the corresponding time period.

power operates as a force which shapes the characters' lives and relationships. Torvald has authority over his wife Nora, reinforced by societal gender norms and his role as her husband. This dynamic is shown in Torvald's condescending pet names for Nora and his control over her actions and decisions.

When Nora acts in a dishonest way, her husband says that she cannot interact with her children, which leads to ultimately discovering aspects of Torvald's personality, and this also connects to the power that he has over her. The writer creates this, to show that Torvald isn't the man who we think he is, because he was firstly portrayed as a reasonable, perfect husband, and this clashes with the late views of how the audience sees him.

ex: "For eight whole years! - she who was my joy and pride - hypocrite! - a liar! - worse! worse! a criminal! - oh the hideous of it! shame on you, shame!"

The main plot of the play shows Nora borrowing money, but it is outside of Torvald's values, as they don't have the same opinion on the subject. Torvald sees borrowing money as worse than death itself, which shows his values and beliefs towards societal as well as Christian beliefs. Nora sees Torvald's life as more valuable than borrowing money.

They want us to question the moral aspect of the situation: Is it better to follow your own religious practise, or acting in a more ethical manor, and the decisions you make, will depend on the situation itself. Nora is one side of the story, as she bends her values of integrity, but she finds this necessary in order to save her husbands life. Torvald on the other hand, when he becomes aware of the situation, does not consider the ethical aspect of the situation, and finds what Nora did unbelievable.

At the start of the plot, she unconsciously follows her husband's orders, and doesn't understand the consequences and how she is being treated. She makes a development throughout the plot, and sees what her husband is doing, and she wants to find herself. That is ultimately why she leaves. To search for her true self. This is important because it shows that people should have control over their lives.
