According to Statistics Canada, 1 180 people died by suicide between 2011 and 2016. For Inuit, the rate was 72.3 deaths per 100,000 people in 2011 at risk. Though it might not seem absurdly high, it’s around nine times higher than non-Indigenous people. This is because during the 20th century, Indigenous kids who were just leading happy and peaceful lives were essentially kidnapped against their will and taken to aboriginal boarding school. These schools didn’t only want to impose Christianism onto the impressionable kids, they wanted to completely erase the native culture. When the students either spoke in their native language or failed to learn passages from the Christian bible, they were savagely beat without any remorse. This was an unimaginably traumatizing experience that, to this day, affects the lives of a multitude of indigenous people. Another reason of this high suicide rate is poor housing. It's common to have up to 4 families in one 3 bedroom house. They take turns sleeping in the beds.
First Nations Mental Wellness Continuum Framework and the The National Inuit Suicide Prevention Strategy are both communities that try to improve First Nations mental health in Canada. They help aboriginal citizens balance their mental, and emotional state. First Nation suicide is an important issue that affects the majority of  Indigenous nations. that won’t solve itself.
