Colonial Reactions:
The first reaction of the American colonists was to complain and buy stamps until the Virginia House of Burgesses passed Patrick Henry's Stamp Act, which resolved the claim that Americans should have the right to be taxed by their own representatives.

What was taxed
 The Sugar Act established taxes on foreign coffee, sugar, pimiento and select wines, and limited the colonists' ability to export lumber and iron to the French West Indies.

Colonial reactions
American colonists responded to the Sugar Act and the Currency Act with protest. In Massachusetts, participants in a town meeting cried out against taxation without proper representation in Parliament, and suggested some form of united protest throughout the colonies.
