I teach machine tool technology for grades 9-12, and at our school vocational courses are untracked and all students in each program take shop and related class together, regardless of their level of ability in their academic classes. I have had numerous students that are on IEP's and have had success in helping them to have an equitable experience and work towards their educational and career goals. As for meeting the needs of all students I feel that it depends on what is being taught and how large the class is and what the overall dynamic is. However I feel that the inclusion model absolutely does have the potential to support the needs of all

Recently, the struggle has been to ensure that these standard courses don't become populated solely by students with IEPs and 504s. We do encourage students with special needs to take honors or AP courses but of course not every student is suited for those classes. Which brings me back to what is a truly inclusive class. One standard course I'm currently teaching has 18 students but only 4 are regular education students, the other 14 are on a 504 or IEP, which does not best support the needs of all students. I think down the road this could be really great. However, this year there has been no planning time for teachers and it is more "special ed in the back of the room", rather than being fully inclusive. I think it also makes sense to look at each child and decide whether or not it makes sense for them to be in the classroom, or if it makes sense for them to be pulled so that their needs are being met. This year we also had many students being identified with a learning disability and we do not have enough special education teachers to meet their needs. I know that was part of Carpenter's argument that when you don't do it well it really doesn't work which is what is going on now. And just as he said in his argument, this leaves teachers with an unnecessary amount of guilt. Inclusion looks different for everyone depending on their needs, which sounds great, but in reality how are these needs being met? Supposedly with wrap around services, parents, AND the teacher, because "it takes a village to raise a child" right? Worcester in fact, is known, for offering the best special education services and programs in Massachusetts. We offer life skills, partial inclusion, and full inclusion, and STEP. This year, budget allowed for the additional of special education teachers/liaisons to be implemented in core academic classes only. I teach electives courses so I do not have much assistance within the classroom. However, the liaison emails me and keeps me updated with parents and students needs. I have about 2-3 504's and about 4-5 IEP's in a class of 25 students. I offer differentiated assignments and work with students, parents/guardians, and liaisons as best as I can but sometimes it can be difficult although I feel that I can manage. My classes are not tracked and all abilities are together. I do have difficulty challenging my advanced students due to others needs and 33% ESL student population in each classroom.
