Science Fiction gives us a bigger view on things, how the government works, aliens, robots. Even though it could help us understand the future, I think it would make us more afraid of what would happen. In my padlet, I will be going over certain pieces of evidence that point to my conclusion, science fiction makes us more afraid of the unknown.

The Pedestrian

In the pedestrian, it is a so-called "utopia" where there is no crime and everyone stays inside their house all day. “He walked like a man suddenly drunk. As he

passed the front window of the car he looked in. As he had expected, there was no one in the front seat, no one in the car at all.” This is a significant quote from the story that accurately represents the type of city they live in. It shows how their civilization is run by robots. This would make us fear the near future because it could show how robots took over humanity and force people to stay inside. In the story, the person is getting arrested by a robot car for walking outside. This shows humans will give in to robots even though they didn't do anything wrong. A lot of people are already afraid of robots taking over humans from a popular movie, "The Terminator". These types of sci-fi stories where civilization is run by mostly robots could make us fear the near future. Another quote from this story, “All the houses looked like tombstones” and, “All the houses looked the same” this would make us fear the future/unknown because we wouldn’t have as much freedom and it wouldn’t be much of a “utopia”.

Examination Day

The story, Examination Day is another story where everyone is equal and it is a so-called “utopia”. In the story, they execute people if they have an Iq over the government's standards. This sci-fi story would also make us fear the future where the government has too much power over simple things like Iq. This could make us fear the future because we would realize how much power the government actually has. A story like the examination day would not give us a greater understanding of the future because it would give us more things to worry about.

The New Utopia

According to the story, the new utopia, the main character states that when everyone is equal, “Everyone looked patient and depressed.” This piece of evidence makes us fear the future because nobody would be happy and everyone would be depressed. No one would be the same and we would have achieved equality but to a far greater extent. The story about the new utopia also recognized people by numbers instead of names because they think that names are unfair. This story would give us more things to worry about in the future than it would help us understand. Most sci-fi stories seem to give a lot of things to worry about in the future rather than understanding it.

The Invasion From Outer Space

This story is about how scientists found something from outer space coming towards earth. People assumed it was a U.F.O or something along the lines of that. But it was just yellow dust. "We had wanted, we had wanted—oh, who knew what we’d been looking for? We had wanted blood, crushed bones, howls of agony." This is a significant quote from the story that relates to the questions because it shows how much people wanted something to happen. They wanted violence in the world. Another quote shows how worried they were about this U.F.O., "Some of us left work immediately and hurried home to our families, others stayed close to the TV, the radio, the computer, we were all talking into our cells." This quote can represent how worried they were about their families when they heard the news. This literally shows the worry and how scared they were about this U.F.O. coming to earth. Science fiction would make us more scared and worried about the future than give us a greater understanding exactly like how the people in this story reacted.
