The city of Thebes was then sacked and burnt by the Macedonians in a brutal manner.  The survivors were sold into slavery and the land was given to other Greeks. This shocked the other Greek city-states into submission before Alexander, who pardoned them. Alexander’s rule was now secure and the road open for him to invade Persia.
