When President James Polk has sent America into war against Mexico in 1846 America acquired a great amount of land from Mexico that was now to be disputed as either a free state or a slave state. New states such as California, Nevada, Utah were states that were going to be decided as a slave or free state. After the compromise was presented, Stephen Douglass decided that the bill was to be split into 5 different bills. The bills were about: California being annexed into the United states without slavery, the claiming of the Texas border with Mexico, Utah and New Mexico entering the Union and throwing off the balance of slave and free states, bringing the fugitive slave trade in Washington DC to an end, and the a more strict fugitive slave law.
