In the article “The Master’s Tools will Never Dismantle the Master’s House”, Lorde states how in a paper she read, “there was no examination of mutuality between women, no systems of shared support, no interdependence as exists between lesbians and women-identified women. Yet it is only in the patriarchal model of nurturance that women ‘who attempt to emancipate themselves pay perhaps too high a price for the results,’ as this paper states”. Women are often placed into a box regarding who they are expected to be. Black women, in particular, face significant adversity and may not conform to societal expectations of womanhood due to their unique social upbringing. As a result, when black women speak their truth in challenging situations, they are often unfairly labeled as "angry." This stigma arises from the discomfort others feel when black women assert themselves.

Whether verbally or visually seen, there are many ways that Black women have fought for liberation. For example, with Fine art, which gives the audience the ability to convey deep emotions, complex ideas. Faith Ringgold, an Black Feminist Artist, whose works addressed issues of race, gender and social justice. Faith stated, “I became a feminist because I wanted to help my daughters, other women and myself aspire to something more than a place behind a good man. In the 1970’s, being black and a feminist was equivalent to being a traitor to the cause of black people. “You seek to divide us,” I was told. “Women’s Lib is for white women. The black woman is too strong now—she’s already liberated.”

Though the mainstream feminist art movement was centered around women’s experiences, it was told through the White lens, excluding the Black woman. The "traditional" methods often marginalize or silence the voices and experiences of Black women, as the perspective of White women is often viewed as the primary source of knowledge. Black feminist methodologies are non-taxonomic, meaning they do not fit neatly into conventional categories. Since there is no clear solution to the "problem" people are more likely to overlook things they cannot define. In life, there is a tendency for individuals to categorize things and place people and circumstances into boxes. When something cannot be defined or categorized, it tends to evoke fear due to the unknown.
