This quote shows that Walter is selfish because most of the time he cares more about money then anything else. He thinks that money is what is life is mostly about and not family, that's why he is so selfish because he isn't thinking about the people he loves. This quote shows that Walter is hateful because he is always finding someone to yell at and when he does he is not a nice guy. Whenever someone is trying to help him he doesn't let it happen because he hates it. This just shows that he is hateful because even when Ruth tried making him eggs he hated it and screamed at her. So he hates everything about his life at the time.

This poem represents Walter because at some point he feels like his life his lonely and doesn't have anyone, because everyone was upset with him. His life is a struggle because he doesn't make that much money driving people around, and he gets sick of his job and pretends he is sick and doesn't go to work. In the poem when it says "living a life with nothing to gain" it is kinda saying that Walter has no life and he is making no money and he is depressed about it. In the 3rd part when Walter did something horrible he was overwhelmed in shame because he knows he did something really bad and regrets it. He tries to take away the depression by drinking and getting drunk but it usually results in him getting more upset or happy. Walter is a 50 50 man when it comes to drinking because it either makes him happy or sad, and he thinks everyone hates him when he drinks. He thinks all the people that he loves hate him because of what he does and how he acts. Walter thinks about himself more then his family because when he got the check from Mama he gave it to someone to go and buy a liquor store end the guy stole the money, so they ended up with no money and no store. One quote that supports this theme is “I have been married eleven years and I got a boy who sleeps in the living room -- and all I got to give him is stories about how rich white people live" (34). 

The reason this quote relates to the theme is because he explains how he has been married 11 years and nothing really exciting has happened and how he talks about rich people. It relates to the theme because he talks about his dream which is being rich but the reality is that he is not. When he talks about wanting to buy a liquor store, that is a dream of his but the reality is that he can't get it because it is a lot of money.
