A central concept in Sikhism is that of the Khalsa. The Khalsa began as a brotherhood of warriors founded by Gobind Singh in 1699 in response to persecution by the Mughal rulers of India. Any male Sikh who wants to join was inducted into the Khalsa by a rite called the amrit sanskar. Today, the Khalsa

is open to both men and women, and the amrit sanskar is considered to be the most important rite of passage in Sikhism. They are also required to wear the emblems known as the Five Ks: kes or kesh, uncut hair and beard, kangha, a comb to hold the hair in place; kirpan, a sword; kara, a steel bracelet; and kachha, a pair of short trousers. They also have to wear turbans.

In 1947, the British colony of India was divided into two countries, India and Pakistan. Many Sikhs in the western Punjab migrated to the part that India retained, and many of them wanted their own state. The Sikhs liked growing prosperity as agriculture thrived in Punjab, but this growth was

interrupted in the mid-1980s. Conflict broke out between the Indian government and Sikh fundamentalists, who were demanding a separate Sikh nation-state. A fundamentalist is a person who follows a strict version of their religion.
