John Deere was one of the first to design agricultural tools and machines to meet the specific needs of Midwestern farmers. Inventing the first commercially successful steel plow in 1837. Deere founded Deere and company which was and still is one of the leading construction and equipment manufacturers. McCormick was raised with a limited formal education and at a young age  took a liking to farming mechanics. In 1831 McCormick turned his attention to the problems with harvest, transportation, and plowing. McCormick found the McCormick Harvesting Machine company in 1902 .
