I can perform first aid skills (splinting, bracing, blood control, taping) - (DOK 3)

During this unit we learned many different taping techniques and when each taping technique is useful. We also were given a chance to argue our stance about if taping versus bracing. I loved getting to tape during class because it gave us a chance to interact which is always better than having to do a worksheet. We learned about blood control through videos and although we actually test that personally in class, I still learned how to properly control blood in an emergency situation.

In the case of an emergency one should take these precautions:
1-Make sure the scene is safe and check to see if the person is breathing
2-Have someone call 911 and explain the situation
3-Begin CPR if you are trained to do so
4-Use an AED if avalible
5-Wait for EMS to arrive
We learned this through watching videos from the American Red Cross. However, I think I remembered it better from creating our own chain of survive infographic. I also thought the infographic was a lot more fun than watching videos.

There are a number of different enviromental injuries that we covered in class. I focused on dental sport injury safety when we were tasked to create a PSA video. Through this project I learned that most contact sports require the use of mouthgards in order to prevent dental injuries. We also were able to watch PSA videos from other students which helped a lot because I find it easier to learn from my peers sometimes.

I can make an inference of proper treatment based on the situation -(DOK 4)

When approaching an emergency situation it is important to understand that different situations are going to require different treatments. For example, if a person is losing a lot of a blood but is conscious you would not perform CPR. Instead, after taking all the necessary safety precautions you would apply pressure. We learned all of the proper treatments through the First Aid videos.

Sports medicine team refers to many different medical professions such as, athletic trainers, physical therapists specialty physcians etc. We did not go into a lot of detail about these professions in class but because we did the "Profession Project" I had a chance to take a look at the different things these members get to do. Although it was super interesting I was more drawn towards the idea of being a neurologist because I can work with athletes and other patients.

I can critique movements that are associated with specific joints - (DOK 3)

I took anatomy last year and one thing that I struggled to understand was the joint spaces and their specific functions. I now feel a lot more confident with this topic. For example, I understand that the tricep branchi is responsible for two joint movements including elbow extension and glenhumeral extension. In contrast the bicep branchi is responsible to glenohumeral flexion, elbow flexion etc. It is really interesting to know and understand that although these two muscles are in the same region they are responsible for two different joint movements.

In class we learned about the shoulder region through notes. I learned that the bones that make up this region are the scapula, clavicle and humerus. Although the scapula and clavicle seem like a given, I was shocked to learn the the humerus is apart of this region.
We also learned ths different landmarks of this region which is not something I ever focused on in other classes. The muscle anatomy search was something that helped me really understand the function and insertion of each muscle that is makes up the scapula.

The knee region is made of multiple bones (femur, patella, fibula and tibia). In addition to learning these bones we also learned different landmarks, joints and soft tissue. I learned most of the bones last year during my anatomy course but I did have a hard time grasping at the idea of the joints and their functions in that course. I feel a lot more confident with these two concepts now that we went over it in this class. Notes are not always my favorite thing to do during class but getting to use colors made up for it.
