Strategic planning and thorough castings ensure that the future superstars cater to all the tastes of their potential fans. 
Vocal talent, dance moves, appearance and style vary but add up to make the perfect entity. There has to be "a boy for everyone" (e.g. the goofball, the shy one, the crazy one,...), one stereotype appealing to each part of the fan group, respectively.

Band members outgrow these ideals rather quickly, however. Which leaves a question: Can the men be a boy group still? Is there room for growing up and remaining popular? 
When the innocent appearances change in favor of masculine shapes, unshaven jaws and mistakes people make growing up, but can never be hidden from the public eye when they are the member of a popular boy group, will the fans stick with them? Knowing the image of the boys they were, what kind of men are they expected to become?  Questions of masculinity interfere with the process of those teenage superstars growing into adults. They, too, have to reinvent their adult identity along with their evolving sexuality, a sense of fashion, behavioral patterns - all under the watchful eye of the ever present media.

The lust factor is not to be ignored when it comes to  incomprehensible fan responses such as crying, begging, or throwing underwear in the direction of the band members. Ab shots, underwear shots on the covers of magazines, topless sweaty dance moves are all intended to evoke a physical reaction, kindling the fans' sexual fantasies and objectifying the musicians. The male body in model-worthy shape becomes the centre of attraction for the fans, and once again, also an ultimate (unreachable?) goal for the average boys and men out there who will feel constantly measured by the standards of boy group perfection. Toxic masculinity at its best?!

While fans buy into the picture perfect image, real life teenage boys will find it hard to live up to the role model of a sensitive yet sexy boy-man who is also good with words.
