“Compassion in Action: My Elective Journey with the OKU Community at Rumah Amal Kulim”

Name: Nivnassree a/p Karmeham

Matric No: A195386

Date: 20/7/2025

2. Your progress so far

In Week 3, I was involved in helping out with the physiotherapy sessions, specifically working with the Toleransi group — mainly children with Down Syndrome. I assisted with simple physio exercises and sensory stimulation. One case that stood out was a girl with bowed legs. I supported her during cycling exercises aimed at strengthening her abdominal muscles and enhancing her sensory input. Through these hands-on activities, I gained a deeper understanding of the physical challenges faced by children with Down Syndrome, including scoliosis, hypotonia, and sensory deficits. I was asked to work with a physiotherapist working for this home.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

This week was incredibly insightful and humbling. I saw first-hand how therapeutic interventions can significantly improve the quality of life for children with physical and neurological challenges. I felt grateful to be able to contribute, even in a small way, and was deeply inspired by the physiotherapists’ patience and dedication. It reminded me that healthcare is not just about diagnosing and treating, but also about supporting day-to-day functions and enhancing quality of life.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision-making in your EP journey?

I learned to make quick, situational decisions — for example, adjusting the support I provided during cycling based on the child’s comfort and strength level. I also had to decide when to engage or step back, depending on the child’s mood and response. These decisions required close observation, empathy, and clear communication with the physiotherapists.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

I followed the structured daily schedule set by the home, which helped me stay on track. Outside of the main activities, I took time to reflect on what I learned each day and prepare mentally for the next. I also made sure to balance engagement with rest to avoid burnout, as working with children with special needs can be physically and emotionally demanding.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

Next week, I look forward to working at the daycare section with the younger OKU children. I hope to observe how the staff manage daily routines like feeding, hygiene, playtime, and rest. I’m excited to engage with the kids in a more nurturing and structured environment and to gain a deeper understanding of early childhood care in this special community.

Lessons in Patience and Compassion: My journey at Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheras

Nurhayati Binti Basri

A193988

22 August 2025

Your progress so far

The third week of the posting, we continue to join morning activities with Ms Kobayashi and weekly gotong-royong. This time we're going to the lake near Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheras. We assist the residents going there by 5 walking minutes. They have coconut trees, mango trees and lime trees. The residents enjoy their time eating mango and coconut drinks. On 21 August, “Pertandingan Senam Sihat Dan Lompat Tali Hepili Peringkat Daerah Hulu Langat” was held here. The residents join them with their aerobic dance in the morning and some of them are chosen to have a medical check up with Dr in charge here. Then, I even got a turn to the TCA with a community nurse Farah and Afendi to Klinik Kesihatan Batu 9. We're bringing together 3 residents. Lastly, we help in the canteen, where the best we can do is meal distribution. We prepare their lunch together with the person in charge there. We help to bring food to the residents that have priority such as couldn't walk properly or use a stick.

Your feelings and thoughts

I'm really grateful to see how residents enjoy their time here. I think they're been provided with good facilities. When I'm talking to them, I'm glad they're saying Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheras have taken care of them very well. They also claimed that they've joined the programs organised by other organizations. The experience reminded me that true well being comes from both comfort in living conditions and the feeling of being loved and valued.

How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

During my elective posting at Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheras, I learned decision making by assessing situations and choosing the best approach for the resident whether to listen, assist or engage in activities. I also applied teamwork when dividing tasks and adjusting plans with my friends. This experience taught me to make decisions with empathy, flexibility, and responsibility.

How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

On the first day of the first week, we have been discussing together in a team to prepare a schedule throughout this 4 weeks posting. We were asking the nurses and person in charge regarding their task then we can plan ahead. Other than that, we even take a turn to go for TCA one by one so that everyone can have experience assisting residents to the Hospital and Klinik Kesihatan. Besides, we also have a break for lunch and “solat” in the afternoon where most residents are taking a nap after lunch. Most of the time, the three of us work together in a team. In the end, I would say our time is well managed as we don't face any problems or overlapping activities so far and joined most other activities held here.

Your plan for next week (Week 4)

Our plan next week is to continue our health monitoring to those that haven't done it yet. Next, we will join the weekly “gotong-royong” together with the residents and morning activities with Ms Kobayashi. We're planning to do as much cleaning and tidying up in surau as we can. Besides, we will be actively involved in surau activities also that includes “kelas fardhu ain" and “kelas mengaji” from Ustaz Helmi.

Muhammad Firdaus Bin Muhamad Nahar, A191971, 22/8/2025

Your progress so far

For this week, as the weeks before, I continued to help Miss Kobayashi with her daily enrichment activities with the residents. Other than that, I also managed to help out at the dining hall, I helped in serving food during lunchtime for the residents, and bringing the food for those who had walking difficulties. I also helped the jururawat masyarakat, accompanying the residents to their clinics and hospitals appoinment. We went to nearby clinics and hospitals such as Hospital Kajang, Hospital Serdang, and Klinik Kesihatan Batu 9 Cheras.

Also we had quite a busy day on Thursday, 21/8; there was a health checkup being done for the residents at the clinic here, while at the same time this centre was used to host "Pertandingan Senam Sihat dan Lompat Tali Peringkat Daerah Hulu Langat" which is a competition among both the primary and secondary schools in Hulu Langat district. I helped out at the clinic with the health checkup, in which I helped guiding the residents around and accompany them as needed.

Your feelings and thoughts

I continued to enjoy my time here and had a lot of fun spending time with the old folks, the staffs and my friends. The residents especially, always had their quirks and stories to tell which I thoroughly enjoyed. However, there were times when I felt a little bit tired, but I managed to push through anyways and tried my best to make the most of what remaining time I have here.

How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

I think the moment I learned and applied decision making skill was when we were planning on activities to be done here, as we had to come up with things that is beneficial for this centre and the residents, all while being within our capacity. Hence, how we came up with the plan to distribute the tasks, which seems plausible for us to do, throughout the four weeks. The first two weeks was when we mostly do the health monitoring activity while helping Miss Kobayashi with her daily activities, this week we helped out at the dining hall, and next week is to do some works at the surau.

How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

While at the centre during the day, I mostly just followed the activities planned and the centre's daily schedule, hence it was quite productive as I almost always had something to do. Meanwhile, in the evening and at night, I allocated those time for myself, catching up on shows I wanted to watch, finishing the pile of books on my bookshelf and such.

Your plan for next week

As before, I planned to continue helping Miss Kobayashi next week, and also we planned to do some works at the surau, probably help tidying up a bit, and doing some light cleaning.

Community Engagement and Early Exposure in My Elective Journey at Wishesland

Chriselda Dorence Ak Terence, A194710, 24/08/2025

1. Your progress so far
This week, I learned how to handle children when they are in tantrum mode by trying to figure out what they like, such as the songs they enjoy listening to. Although some of the patients are blind, they are able to hear, and playing familiar songs helps to calm them down. This experience serves as an early exposure to handling children, which will be valuable during my paediatric posting in Year 4.

In addition, we started to set up a booth at Aeon Mall, Kuching, where we introduced Wishesland and the programmes offered to the community. I realised that many people were not aware of this NGO. During the event, some visitors expressed interest in registering as volunteers with Wishesland, while others showed intention to register their children. Volunteers were also encouraged to support by donating daily necessities such as pampers and food.

At the booth, we distributed brochures where parents shared their personal experiences of raising children with cerebral palsy, the struggles they faced, and how they managed to overcome them. We also received donations from the public, and some individuals registered to participate in the upcoming charity run in Sibu, Sarawak, which will help support Wishesland’s mission.

2. Your feelings and thoughts
I feel honoured to have the chance to volunteer at the booth. It has helped me improve my communication and social skills, as I was able to interact with different members of the community and introduce Wishesland to those who were previously unaware of it.

3. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision-making in your EP journey?
I learned decision-making skills by interacting with both patients and members of the public. For example, when handling children in tantrum mode, I had to quickly decide on the best approach to calm them, such as identifying suitable songs. At the booth, I also had to decide how to explain about Wishesland in a way that was simple, clear, and suitable for different age groups. These situations required me to think fast, adapt, and apply good judgment in order to achieve positive outcomes.

4. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
I managed my time by balancing between volunteering duties at Wishesland, setting up and attending the booth, and ensuring that I also had enough time for rest and my own studies. I tried to stay organised by prioritising tasks according to urgency and importance. For example, during booth activities, I focused fully on engaging with visitors, while after volunteering hours I made time to reflect on the day and prepare for the next activity.

5. Your plan for next week (Week 4)
For Week 4, my plan is to assist with the documentation process, which involves registering the Wishesland community members, patients, and volunteers. I will also continue to help manage the booth and ensure that information is well-delivered to the public. Through this, I hope to further develop my skills in organisation, teamwork, and communication.

Salvation Army Boys Home: Decisions That Shape the Journey

1. Your name, matric number, date

ADRIAN SELVAN A/L ANTHONI S.SELVAN (A195616)

(18/8/25-22/8/25)

2. Your progress so far

So far, I have conducted several mini-lessons with the boys on Puberty Changes, Sex Education, Personal Hygiene, and Nutrition, which were the assigned topics. These sessions allowed the boys to learn and ask questions openly, making the atmosphere interactive. It was encouraging to see them engage with the discussions, and I felt that the topics were meaningful for their age and stage of life.

During the third week, my time with the boys was less about formal sharing and more about activities. I introduced them to origami shirts, while they, in turn, taught me some of their favourite origami designs. Some of the boys even gifted me their creations, which I found very touching. Although it was fun, the sessions were still a little challenging as I had to balance between guiding and letting them lead the activities.

The boys also asked me for movie suggestions during their weekly TV time, since I had joined them earlier to watch Blood Brothers. After exploring several Indian and English trailers together, we agreed on watching Animal. However, on Thursday morning the internet cable outside the boys’ home was stolen, which meant TV time had to be cancelled. Instead, the boys spent their Friday evening playing Monopoly and card games, which still kept the spirit of fun alive.

Sports continued to be a highlight in our daily activities. For the first two weeks, the boys mostly played football, basketball, and badminton. This week, however, they set up their own net and started playing sepak takraw. I joined in briefly but mostly enjoyed watching, as some were already skilled while others were still learning. I also helped a few of them prepare a poster for their school’s Merdeka Day celebration, which brought back nostalgic memories of my own school days.

Another enjoyable part of the week was playing UNO, which became a daily tradition for almost an hour. Despite being a familiar game, it felt refreshing because the boys introduced new and creative rules that made the matches more exciting. To end the week, the Friday devotion session was very special. The speaker used games, including a balloon activity, to explain how problems in life accumulate if not addressed, but can be managed by putting God first. It was not only fun but also a meaningful way to wrap up the week.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

After completing two weeks with the boys, I began to feel more natural and relaxed around them. I was no longer as stern in handling situations because they had become friendlier and more well-behaved with me. As a reward for their positive attitude, I reduced the time spent on talks and allowed more playtime, where I joined them as well. I realized that while some boys took almost two weeks to genuinely trust me enough to share their thoughts and feelings, others became close to me within just a few days. This showed me how each boy was different in their own way, and I needed to give them the space and time they required to build trust.

I also felt a sense of relief and happiness knowing that I had managed to complete almost all the important talks I had planned, along with the topics my supervisor expected me to cover. By the third week, the boys were much more open and responsive during sharing sessions. They began asking thoughtful questions and clarifying their doubts, which I was more than happy to answer. What made me especially glad was that some boys who had been quiet in the beginning only started speaking up in this third week, showing that the bond between us was slowly but surely growing stronger.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

I feel my decision-making skill started when I had to decide on what I wanted to do for my elective posting itself. At first, I was a bit attracted to going overseas, but after thinking about the amount of time I would spend alone and other factors, I felt that doing it somewhere near my house was much better in many ways. Eventually, volunteering at the boys’ home was suggested by my brother, as he believed people in homes and orphanages would truly benefit from my presence. I couldn’t agree more with his suggestion, and that was the first major decision I made in this journey.

Once I began the posting, I had to make decisions about planning and delivering my talks. After receiving the topics from my supervisor, I decided on when to present them each week and which ones to prioritize first. At the same time, I also considered the boys’ schedules and energy levels, especially since they often returned from school tired and exhausted. This required me to design my talks in a fun and engaging way so that they could learn while still enjoying the sessions.

Finally, there were many times at the boys’ home when I had to rearrange my schedule to fit into their existing routine of housework, playtime, and devotion. I had to slot my activities wisely without disrupting their flow. At times, when certain activities took longer than expected, I had to make quick decisions on the spot by compromising on other activities or shortening them. In some situations, I also discussed these adjustments with my supervisor to ensure everything remained balanced.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

In terms of time management, I had to make careful decisions about when to leave my house for the boys’ home each day since it usually took me around 30–40 minutes to reach there. I always made sure to leave early to avoid traffic jams and to arrive on time. My sessions were scheduled in the afternoons until night, as that was when the boys would return from school. I also gave them some time to bathe, have their meals, and relax before starting the sessions, as this allowed them to concentrate better and benefit more from what I was sharing.

For my own personal time during this month of elective posting, I used my mornings productively before leaving for the boys’ home. I would spend time preparing my materials and finalizing the flow of the day’s activities so that I felt confident and ready to engage with the boys. This routine helped me stay organized and ensured that my sessions were carried out smoothly.

After returning home around 9.30 pm each night, I would take some time to reflect on the day by considering what went well and what needed improvement. I also made small plans for the following day so that I could set up everything more easily the next morning. Overall, by balancing my travel, preparation, reflection, and session times, I found it quite manageable to organize my schedule effectively throughout the elective posting.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

For the final week, my focus will be on the theme of Future and Mentoring. On Monday, the boys will begin with a drawing activity called “Me in 10 Years” to help them visualize their future. This will be followed by Talk 7: Mentoring & Role Modelling where I will share about the importance of positive influences. In the evening, we will continue with study help and then end with a sharing circle on “Who Inspires Me”.

On Tuesday, the activities will revolve around time management skills. The boys will take part in a short workshop on managing their school time, followed by a fun game where they sort daily tasks by priority. Later, in groups, they will plan a “perfect day” and create their own personal timetables. At night, we will reflect together on “Why planning helps me” to reinforce the importance of good organization. Wednesday will focus on strengths and goals, starting with a worksheet “I Am Good At…”, then creating a “Life Goals Tree” along with group sharing of one proud achievement. The evening will include a guided study session and a short debrief on what went well.

The week will then move towards closure and reflection. On Thursday, the boys will write a “Letter to My Future Self”, followed by a video and discussion on cyberbullying awareness. The evening will be lighter, with free reading or mentoring chats, and preparations for the final presentation. Finally, Friday will be the highlight of the week with the Final Presentations or Sharing Session, followed by a group celebration with snacks and music. We will also photo time, ending with a farewell circle to wrap up the journey meaningfully.

Beyond Therapy: Reaching Out to the Community

Bathrisyia Claudia Anak Harrykirk, A196265, 24th August 2025

1. Your progress so far

By Week 3, I feel much more involved in the activities at Wishesland. During the weekdays, I continued observing and assisting with the physiotherapy and hydrotherapy sessions. I was even trusted to guide a child in the pool under supervision, which was a very meaningful hands-on experience.

On the weekend, I joined Wishesland’s awareness booth at a nearby shopping mall. This was a whole new experience for me because I got to interact directly with the public, sharing about cerebral palsy and the work that Wishesland does.

2. Your feelings and thoughts

This week made me reflect a lot. While I enjoyed the booth activity, I realised how little awareness there is about cerebral palsy and about NGOs like Wishesland. Sometimes people passed by without much interest, and it could feel a bit discouraging. But at the same time, it reminded me why awareness work is so important. It was a good challenge to learn how to explain things in simple, layman terms and try to capture people’s attention.

Being in the hydrotherapy pool with the children also made me appreciate the trust given by the physiotherapists. It wasn’t easy, but it gave me confidence and showed me how much responsibility comes with handling children with special needs.

3. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

I noticed that decision-making happened in both small and big moments. During hydrotherapy, I had to decide when to assist the child with movement and when to let them try on their own, always making safety the top priority. At the booth, I also had to decide how to explain CP to different people—sometimes keeping it short and simple, other times giving more detail depending on their curiosity and background. It taught me to think quickly, adapt, and still deliver information meaningfully.

4. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

So far, I’ve managed my time by balancing weekdays at Wishesland with weekend commitments at the booth. It was tiring at times, especially standing long hours at the booth, but it felt worthwhile because I knew the cause was meaningful. I also made sure to take breaks and rest whenever I could so I wouldn’t feel drained.

5. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

For my final week, I plan to talk more with the physiotherapists and parents to learn from their experiences, and continue practicing how to explain CP in simple terms. I will also complete the tasks given by my supervisor, which include researching a few CP topics and CSR programs for Wishesland.

Your progress so far

This week, I noticed real progress in myself. Even though Teacher Azimah was away, I was able to adapt quickly and support Teacher Umi Jun in handling the class. I became more confident in giving instructions, guiding the students during lessons, and helping them stay focused. I also improved in managing the students’ energy, especially during the physical activities like frog jumps, kangaroo runs, and duck walks.

Another progress I saw in myself was my ability to engage the students in English lessons. Since it was their first time learning about vehicles in English, I tried to encourage them with simple words and praises. It felt rewarding to see how excited they were to repeat the new words after me.

Overall, I can see that I am becoming more involved in the teaching process, not just observing, but actually assisting and interacting actively with the students. This makes me feel more prepared and confident in handling bigger responsibilities in the coming weeks.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

I felt very happy and motivated this week. Even though Teacher Azimah was not around, I managed to adapt and work closely with Teacher Umi Jun. The students were also very energetic, and I enjoyed seeing how enthusiastic they were during the English lesson and physical activities. I feel like my bond with the students is growing stronger, as they often come to me for help or to share their stories.

I also felt happy watching the students’ excitement during the National Day launch. Their energy during the parade and their focus while coloring the flags made me realize how important school events are in building their sense of pride and belonging.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

Although I am not the main person in charge of the class, I still practiced small decision making skills in my own way. For example, I had to decide how to approach individual students who were sometimes distracted or refused to participate in activities. Sometimes I chose to gently guide them back, and sometimes I gave them a little time before rejoining the group. I also learned by observing how Teacher Umi Jun handled the class, her decisions on when to let the students play, when to bring them back to focus, and how to calm them down taught me that every choice a teacher makes affects the flow of the lesson.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

My role was mainly to follow the class schedule and support the teacher in charge. I managed my time by being punctual, staying focused during each session, and giving my full attention to the students throughout the activities. During free moments, I took the chance to interact with the students, ask them questions, or check on their work. From this, I learned that good time management is not only about planning but also about being consistent, present, and ready to help whenever needed.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

For next week, I plan to continue helping in the classroom by supporting both academic and non-academic activities. I want to pay more attention to how the students learn during different lessons, whether it is English, Mathematics, or other creative tasks like coloring and drawing. I also plan to observe more of their behavior during physical activities so I can better understand how to keep them engaged and active. My main goal is to keep building stronger connections with the students while assisting the teachers to ensure every activity runs smoothly.

Expanding Horizons: What I Learned About Medicine Beyond the Hospital

Nurul Husna binti Shaharuddin A195852 ,(18th August to 22th August 2025)

1. Progress so far

In Week 3, I intended to learn more regarding JKM, zakat, and Baitul Mal schemes, follow up on education aid and DBKL instances, participate more actively in team discussions, share my thoughts with peers, and go to the talk by Prof. Mohtar on healthcare involvement.

It has been a really rewarding week. I was able to attend a presentation by Prof. Dr. Mohtar, an ophthalmologist who has devoted a significant portion of his career to humanitarian work overseas, titled Doctors Beyond Hospital Boundaries. He described his incredible experiences working in tsunami-affected regions like Indonesia and his role doing cataract surgery in North Korea. I gained firsthand knowledge of how medical experts may cross political, cultural, and geographic boundaries for the sake of humanity by hearing about his journey.I had insightful conversations with HALUAN members, learning about the diverse roles that NGOs play in healthcare and education.I also helped with administrative duties including filing and documentation, which improved my comprehension of the organisational framework supporting NGO operations.

I also try to increase my participation in team conversations and thought exchange during meetings.

2. Your feelings and thoughts

The events that occurred in this week have been enlightening and life-changing. Prof. Mohtar's address was especially motivating since it emphasised the fundamental purpose of medicine, which is to help people wherever they are in need. His bravery and commitment astounded me, particularly when he talked about doing cataract procedures in North Korea, a nation with little access to outside medical assistance. His anecdotes demonstrated that medicine is not limited to hospital walls but rather reaches underprivileged areas, disaster areas, and even international borders during emergencies.

I am personally more driven than ever to pursue a career in medicine while maintaining a feeling of global duty. The ideals of service, compassion, and resilience were reaffirmed during the productive session. I now have a clearer understanding of how physicians may help reduce suffering by using their clinical expertise as well as their leadership, flexibility, and cooperation with non-governmental organisations.

3. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

I discovered from going through Prof. Mohtar's stories that humanitarian decision-making frequently necessitates striking a balance between urgency and scarce resources. For instance, choices on which interventions to prioritise, who to treat first, and how to adjust to local limitations must be made quickly in a catastrophe situation. I made an effort to put this lesson into practice on my own EP journey by setting priorities for administrative work, conversations, and knowledge-sharing sessions. In order to guarantee the best results, I discovered that decision-making involves more than just picking one activity over another; it also involves evaluating timing and impact.

4. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

After I organised my day around certain objectives, time management became simpler. I set aside the mornings for administrative tasks, the afternoons for discussions or meetings, and the evenings for planning or introspection. I was able to continue being productive without feeling overworked because to this equilibrium. Crucially, I also discovered how to schedule downtime, which helped me stay alert and concentrated.

5.Your plan for next week (Week 4)

I want to get more involved in community participation in Week 4, especially with kids. I want to:

- Lead basic health education exercises like hygiene awareness and handwashing demonstrations.

- Help teachers help students with their writing and reading, and come up with innovative ways to make learning fun.

- Continue to assist with the administrative aspects of NGO work, such as distributing aid and managing paperwork pertaining to welfare.

- Talk about my thoughts and experiences with friends to help them see how important it is to integrate healthcare and education in community service.

Participate more actively in group activities to improve my communication and teamwork abilities.

1. Name / Matric No / Date

Brindda Sundram A197012 18-22August

2. My Progress So Far

By Week 3, my progress has grown as I became more involved in hands-on activities. I participated in cooking and baking, such as preparing biscuits, and I also learned more about arranging flowers and making garlands with others. I had the opportunity to join community work in the kitchen, cleaning, and supporting the temple festival activities. Each task gave me a deeper understanding of teamwork and service.

3. My Feelings and Thoughts

This week, I felt very grateful and joyful to be part of such meaningful work. I enjoyed working with senior devotees and my peers, and I felt motivated seeing how much I could learn through practice. The environment was lively and filled with positivity, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable and memorable.

4. Applying Decision-Making Skills

Throughout this journey, I had to make small but important decisions, such as choosing which tasks to prioritise, whether to help in the kitchen, with garlands, or in festival preparations. I learned to decide based on urgency and importance, while also considering where my help was most needed. This made me more confident in making decisions quickly and responsibly.

5. Time Management

Managing my time was challenging, especially when there were multiple activities happening at once. I balanced my responsibilities by creating a simple routine, focusing on one task at a time and asking seniors for guidance on what should be done first. By working systematically, I managed to complete tasks efficiently without feeling too overwhelmed.

6. My Plan for Week 4

For Week 4, I plan to attend upcoming temple festivals and take videos to document the activities. I will also help with on-the-day decorations and assist in cooking. This will give me more exposure to both the creative and practical aspects of temple service, while also allowing me to capture the memories of this journey.

ANIS SYUHADA BINTI NOOR AZMAN SHAH

A194612

13/7/2025 -17/7/2025

Your progress so far

The third week has arrived, and I was given more responsibility. I conducted a main session for iFITER, where I guided the participants through a 3-minutes per station exercise. I had to demonstrate 5 different exercises for each station, which were scissors, kick butt, squats, lateral leg and high jump. These were combined exercises for high intensity exercise. At first, I was so nervous as I had all of the participants' attention towards me but gradually as time went by, I became more relieved and was able to guide them accordingly. The sessions went well thanks to participants cooperations.

Other than that, I also assisted in two Kelas Warga Emas sessions, at Kampung Bujang and also Taman Jubli Perak. This time around, the exercises involved elastic bands. It was my very first time using it and it was quite challenging. I just followed the guidance from Puan Nadia and Puan Juita while helping to fix the elderly participants’ positions. As using the elastic bands, we had to closely monitor the participants to hold it in the correct way because the elastic bands are easily snapped and could possibly cause unwanted injury. I was glad that the session ended without any injury but with smiles and happiness on their faces.

During the second class, I led a warming up session. It was just a simple warming up session starting from head to toe warm-up movement. The class then proceeded with paired exercise and a simple massage train as usual, and once again it was their favourite part of the sessions.

Later on that week, we had a Wellness on Wheels at Pantai Merdeka. This time, it was a huge program where it involved not only just the Health Promotion Unit, but all of the units at Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah Kuala Muda were involved. I helped with the booth preparation as early as 7.30a.m. I helped set up booths for registration, quizzes on health awareness and also fitness challenges. The other units were also busy setting up their respective booth which provides lots of health information, games and also gifts for the participants. For our booth, we receive quite a number of participants especially from the army for the fitness test. They enjoyed doing the push-up challenge against each other. At the same time, there were also gotong-royong held around the Pantai Merdeka in collaboration with Environment Idaman.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

This week I felt more fulfilled that I got to lead a session and not just observe like previous week. I got to actually feel what it is like to lead a group with different ages and backgrounds. I realized that it takes courage, experience and clear instruction in order for the participants to be able to execute instructions.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

Decision making skills are applied in my elective posting at Wellness Hub via quick decision making while conducting exercise sessions. Most of the time, participants can follow the instructions very well, but at certain times some of them might experience injury such as knee pain that might limit their ability to execute the instruction. Thus at this very moment, I have to change the exercise movement to suit the participant in order to avoid further injury and allow them to still exercise by giving them alternative movements. As most of our exercise requires full body movement, we have to be careful and pay attention to the participants especially those who have movement limitations.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

Throughout this elective posting at Wellness Hub, I am thankful that I did not experience any difficulty in managing my time. I usually arrived 30 minutes early at the gym and respective event place. I will always ask my supervisor everyday regarding my daily schedule to not miss any of the program. Usually in the evening, me and Puan Nadia will have a short briefing regarding the next day's session. I also will prepare beforehand if i were tasked to lead on a session by reviewing the exercise first.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

My plan for the fourth week is to continue on improving my communication skill by trying to engage more with the participants and I would like to be more confident and courageous enough to lead on many more upcoming sessions.

Medicine In Action: Care That Travels

1. Your name, matric number, date

Zarith Hani Binti Muhammad Zairi

A196874

18/8/2025 - 22/8/2025

2. Your progress so far

This week has been one of the most eye-opening experiences I’ve had so far. Attending the sharing session with Professor Mohtar felt almost like stepping into another world. Listening to his stories of working in tsunami-affected regions in Indonesia and performing cataract surgery in Sudan, I could almost picture the crowded hospitals, the long hours, and the limited resources. It made me realize that being a doctor is not just about treating patients within hospital walls, it is about crossing boundaries, adapting to different cultures, and bringing hope to communities that need it the most.

Following up on education aid initiatives and DBKL cases was another eye-opener. Reviewing applications, tracking student progress, and addressing pending issues showed me how important consistency and attention to detail are. Learning about JKM, zakat, and Baitul Mal schemes further opened my eyes to the ways structured support can help marginalized communities survive and thrive.

Working on the OKU and poverty project added another layer to my understanding. Reviewing case follow-ups, documenting outcomes, and planning next steps made me aware of the continuous effort required to make meaningful change.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

This week has been truly eye-opening and has filled me with a mixture of awe and inspiration. Professor Mohtar’s sharing session reminded me of why I chose medicine in the first place: to help people, no matter where they are or what circumstances they face. I learned from his experiences that being a doctor isn't strictly restricted to hospitals or clinics; it can be practiced in underprivileged areas, disaster areas, and even across the globe when people are in dire need.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision-making in your EP journey?

While following up on education aid initiatives and DBKL cases, I often found myself faced with multiple requests and applications, each carrying its own urgency and significance. At first, it felt overwhelming. I wanted to help everyone immediately, but resources and time were limited. I soon understood that effective decisions required pausing, assessing each situation carefully, and considering the broader impact of my choices. It wasn’t just about ticking boxes; it was about thinking critically and putting myself in the shoes of those who depended on our support. During discussions on the OKU and poverty project, decision-making became even more nuanced. I had to weigh short-term relief against long-term benefits, decide which interventions would truly help, and ensure that support reached those who needed it most. Listening closely to the families’ experiences was essential; their stories gave context that numbers and forms alone could never convey. I learned that attentiveness is integral to making thoughtful decisions, and that the best choices often come from combining practical reasoning with an understanding of human needs. Applying these lessons meant breaking complex problems into smaller, manageable parts, consulting my team for perspectives, and reflecting on what had worked or failed before. I also learned to remain flexible, accepting that sometimes decisions must be revisited when new information emerges.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

I began dividing my obligations into more manageable chunks and prioritizing them according to their significance and urgency. Instead of feeling disorganized, this allowed me to concentrate on one task at a time. I also discovered how important it is to be adaptable because, occasionally, unforeseen possibilities or problems forced me to change my goals while still making progress in other areas. I came to see that time management involved more than just setting plans; it also involved carefully deciding where to focus my energies. I learned from this process that setting aside time for education was equally as crucial as doing assignments. I was able to participate in each activity and learn from the experiences by being aware of how I spent my hours. I was more assured by the end of the week that I could balance several tasks without becoming distracted or unmotivated.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

For Week 4, I plan to become more actively involved in community participation, with a particular focus on working with children. I aim to lead basic health education sessions, such as hygiene awareness and handwashing demonstrations, to help instill healthy habits from an early age.

To add, I plan to continue assisting with the administrative aspects of NGO work, including distributing aid and managing welfare-related paperwork, ensuring that support reaches those who need it most. I also hope to share my experiences and reflections with friends, helping them understand the importance of integrating healthcare and education in community service.

I am also particularly excited to get involved with Kelab Kesihatan, an organization that brings together doctors from across Malaysia to form a unified health team for community projects. Being part of this team will allow me to learn how medical professionals collaborate on a national level to provide organized, impactful health support.

Giving Time, Gaining Wisdom: The Power of Volunteering with Seniors

1. Your name, matric number, date

NUR 'ADAM HAIKAL BIN HAMDAN

A194890

22 AUGUST 2025

2. Your progress so far

It has been a milestone for me to reach the 3rd week of my elective posting journey here in Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheras. For this week, as I have done before this, me and my friend continued to help Miss Kobayashi with her daily enrichment activities with the residents. Other than that,I also helped the nurses of the old folks home there by accompanying the residents to their clinics and hospital appointments. Everyday there will be a number of residents who will go for their doctor appointment based on their health problem. One of the parts that amuse me is that every resident here is not heading to the same hospital or clinic for their appointment, but each of them are headed to different hospitals, for example some of them are headed to Hospital kajang, Hospital Serdang and even Hospital Putrajaya. So, it totally depends on me which hospital that I want to accompany the resident with. So I went to accompany a resident named Miss Ooi to Hospital Kajang. The total of hours that I went to accompany them was about 3-4 hours in total including from the start up until the end of the process. Also we had quite a busy day on Thursday, 21/8; there was a health checkup being done for the residents at the clinic here. It was solely organised by a private hospital where they will do annual month checkup for the residents for free, while at the same time this centre was used to host "Pertandingan Senam Sihat dan Lompat Tali Peringkat Daerah Hulu Langat" which is a competition among both the primary and secondary schools in Hulu Langat district. It was a double programme that happened from 8am till 12pm. It was a long day but our main focus is to help out the clinic as at the clinic they are short staffed. I helped out at the clinic with the health checkup, in which I helped guide the residents around and accompany them as needed, other than that we kill our time by having some short conversation with the residents there at the clinic while waiting their turn to see the doctor.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

For the whole 3rd week of my elective posting, I feel excited about new activities that I have done for this week. For example, helping out the resident with their hospital appointment, from this experience I already know it is hard for someone that is aged 60 years old and above to attend an appointment without proper guidance to guide them throughout the whole process. They could get lost and might not get the job done by the end of the day.

For me the heaviest day that i have been through this week 3 is on Thursday which was a fruitful yet tiring experience for me for the whole day. I never felt so worked out before as the day started off by attending the residents to the clinic and making sure the day went by smoothly. But it turned out better than I expected. Even though a lot was going on that day but we managed to help the clinic and also enjoyed our day by seeing the performance that was prepared by the primary and high school students. It was a fun but yet tiring day that I will never forget for the rest of my life.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

I believe the first time I used my decision-making skills was when me and my friends were organising the activities that would take place here. We had to think of ideas that would benefit the centre and the residents while staying within our means. At first the first two weeks, we were a bit lost on what we should do for the next 4 weeks here at Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheras, but after a few days of doing these so called “chores”, we already have the hang of this and start to draft our plan each time before the new weeks began. As a result, we devised a strategy to divide the chores over the course of the four weeks that sounds doable. During the first two weeks, we primarily assisted Miss Kobayashi with her everyday tasks and performed health monitoring. This week, I have already helped the nurse with the appointment, and next week, we will perform some tasks at the surau.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

During our first week here, we have already asked many of the staff including the nurses about the daily routine here in this old folks home. Then from there we already got the hang of it and outlined a harsh time table for all of us to use as our own reference. We began our day by doing our daily health monitoring for the residents here and soon after that settled we quickly helped Miss Kobayashi with her daily routine and usually it ends before the resident lunchtime hours. Then we continue for any activity that is happening within the compound before 5pm. Then when I get back from the old folks home is usually my leisure hours that i spent for myself before starting the next day.

NURWAHIDA BINTI TAJUL ARIFF

A195926

23/8/2025

1. Your progress so far

Going into my 3rd week of working, I thought I couldn't have learned anymore about managing a gallery but I was proven wrong. This week , I had the chance to join a tour that was conducted by one of the staff of the gallery which gave me an insight about the meaning behind the art displayed at level 5 of Ilham gallery. In the end however, art is subjective and it's meaning entirely depends on you and you alone. I also was put at the reception counter more often this week which somehow enabled me to meet a famous collector in Malaysia who is rumored to own at least RM100k worth of artwork. This is when I realised that art is on an upward trend these recent years.

2. Your feelings and thoughts

I felt very relaxed and calm throughout this 3rd week as I have gotten the hang of being a gallery sitter in Ilham gallery. This week was a week of self reflection as I delved deep into myself to reassess what values that I hold dear as the art exhibition at level 5 Ilham gallery struck a chord in me.

3. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

I had to relearn how to make decisions according to the environment and situation. In medical school/ setting , it is easier to be firm when making a decision as it is usually for the better. In the corporate setting though, you need to always consider the repercussions and the impact it might have on your relationships with others. I applied my newly learnt decision making skills in navigating office politics and in how to manage gallery-goers that are a bit rowdy.

4. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

I made a routine for myself that would make me both relaxed but productive at the same time. I find it easier to separate days in to different blocks such as before work, during work and after work. In the morning, it would be a non-negotiable for me to eat and exercise before getting ready to work.

5. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

Next week , I plan to mostly have fun and try to involve myself in the management of the gallery before I end my volunteering there.
