What is it?
Emphysema is a disorder affecting the alveoli of the lungs. The alveoli become abnormally inflated and susceptible to ruptures, which damages their walls and makes it difficult for the individual to breathe. When the alveoli inflate and eventually rupture it creates one larger air space instead of many small ones which reduced the surface area available for gas exchange.

What does it affect?
Although the disorder mainly directly impacts the lungs, eventually the heart system and other organs are affected as to all systems in the body require oxygen and blood to carry out their roles.

Causes
the primary cause of Emphysema is smoking, but when the lungs receive polluted air of any sort the disorder can occur. The contaminated air may also be a source of air pollution such as chemical fumes and dust.

Consequences
People with emphysema are more likely to develop a collapsed lung (pneumothorax) which can be life-threatening, especially those who also have emphysema. They are also more likely to have heart problems because emphysema can increase the pressure in the arteries that connect the heart and lungs.

Treatment and Prevention
