Sal never liked Margaret and when Phoebe told Sal what she thinks that she’s a lunatic and chopped up her husband, Sal likes her less. Her father tells Sal that she doesn’t need to worry because Margaret is not a lunatic. At the end of the book, it turns out the Margaret was not a lunatic and lost her husband to a car crash. It is also revealed that she sat next to Sal’s mom right before she died.

The Winterbottom’s house after Phoebe's mom left is like a reflection of Sal’s family after Sal’s mom left. The crazy yet lively mood of the Finney’s help Sal become more used to her new world.
