While Jeanne spent her time in the internment camps, her surroundings influenced her to take up Baton twirling, an American hobby, to fit in. However, as Jeanne is making attempts to fit into her surroundings, she begins to drift away from her Japanese identity, since she does not stick with any activity traditionally affiliated with Japanese culture.

Since new American activities were introduced in the camp, Jeanne and other Japanese American kids were intrigued. After trying many activities, Jeanne settled on baton twirling, an undoubtedly American activity. Due to her enjoyment, she continued doing baton twirling, slowly separating Jeanne from her culture.

Jeanne just wanted to fit in, she felt the only way she could do that is by rejecting her Japanese culture. And the thing she loved most was her very American hobby of baton twirling. Ever since Jeanne came back from Manzanar, she has wanted to be the same as everyone else, do the same things, and feel accepted by people. She tried many activities, and baton twirling stuck with her even after Manzanar as it was helping her fit in and also was one of her favorite hobbies.
