Tracy K Smith was born in Falmouth, Massachusetts on April 16, 1972. The youngest of five children, she grew up with her family in Northern California. Smith's father was stationed at Travis Air Force Base for most of Smith's childhood and later worked on the Hubble Space Telescope. Her mother was a teacher who went on to have a strong influence on Smith's writing. While living in California, Smith excelled in school and began to take up writing. She then attended Harvard University and graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor of the Arts for English, American Literature, and Afro-American studies. Smith continued at Columbia University, studying creative writing and and earning a Master of Fine Arts degree. Finally, Smith held a Stegner fellowship in poetry for two years at Stanford University. Smith is the author of poetry collections, beginning with The Body's Question, which was published in 2003. The Body's Question won the Cave Canem prize for best first book by an African-American poet. Her second book is titled Duende and won the James Laughin Award as well as the Essense Literary Award. Life on Mars, published in 2011, won a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Smith's most recent book is called Wade in the Water and was published in the spring of 2018. Smith's writing primarily deals with heavy themes such as grief, adulthood, and race but tells stories through references to pop culture and modern identity. She is often praised for the depth and intellectually provocative nature of her poems. In 2014, Smith received the Academy of American Poets Fellowship, and shortly after, she published a memoir entitled Ordinary Light. In this text, Smith reflects on her heritage and changing identity throughout the course of her life. Today, Smith teaches creative writing at Princeton University and hosts a radio segment on American Public Media's daily program called The Slowdown.
