I was surprised to learn the impact of the different foundations on both secondary and higher education. Abraham Flexner's contribution to medical education was also an area that I was unfamiliar with. Working at a Medical College, I was recently invited to attend a Flexner conference and had no idea about the conferences namesake. Great insight to many individuals you read about through the years. I have travelled to campuses around the country for 25 years, Big 12, Pac 12 Big 10 and it was fascinating to learn how many came to "look" as they do. Prior to 1890 most American schools were small in size. Once the big donors got involved we see the evolution of how a campus was designed. The Hearst family at University of California, the Stanford family at Stanford, these were grand designs and drew architects from around the world. Schools wanted their own style, I have been to Stanford and it is incredible.
