I thought this was a very interesting chapter. I was surprised to discover Rockefeller and Vanderbilt's religious motivation for donating to or founding universities. Moreover I thought it was very telling and not at all surprising to learn that University presidents in the style of William Harper had to be gregarious and well connected socially and civically.

Similar to Neil, I found this chapter very interesting and enlightening. I was surprised to learn the impact of the different foundations on both secondary and higher education. Abraham Flexner's contribution to medical education was also an area that I was unfamiliar with. Working at a Medical College, I was recently invited to attend a Flexner conference and had no idea about the conferences namesake. Another area of enlightenment was learning that it was the black land-grant colleges that first introduced the act of giving advice to farmers on crops and home economics (Thelin, 2011, p.135).

Thoroughly enjoyed this chapter! Great insight to many individuals you read about through the years. I have travelled to campuses around the country for 25 years, Big 12, Pac 12 Big 10 and it was fascinating to learn how many came to "look" as they do. Prior to 1890 most American schools were small in size. Once the big donors got involved we see the evolution of how a campus was designed. The Hearst family at University of California, the Stanford family at Stanford, these were grand designs and drew architects from around the world. Schools wanted their own style, I have been to Stanford and it is incredible. Fun to get the back

I was interested to see how initial donations provided by the Captains of Industry influenced other individuals to donate because of their shared religious belief of "good works". How the Captains of Industry selection of Presidents impacted modern American University and introduced best practices and models of a modern university. It was also informative to know the characteristics embodied by the modern universities.
