The dairy industry in New Zealand is what is causing the water to become less pure

2/3 of our rivers are too polluted to swim in

Excess nitrogen and phosphorus in the water cause algae bloom that suffocate the water and kill the animals inside of them. In order to reduce the levels of nitrate, the only option is less agricultural activity.

Reducing the number of cows=Lower nitrate rates

Intensification of agriculture has been related to many disease cases going up.

Our rivers need to be clean in order for the animals inside or around them to thrive.

It seems as everything her is perfect and we have no problems with our environment. However this video is only focusing on the parts of New Zealand that look the best and are able to be "show-off" to other countries.

It is clear that the main contributor to our unhealthy waterways is livestock and their run off contaminating our water ways. This means dumping a large amount of animal waste, phosphorus, nitrogen and other nasty chemicals.

Cows are the main culprits for our dirty water ways. We need to do something before we only have a few clean sources of water left.

world. To the outside it seems as if we have really clean lakes and rivers due to the tourist attraction but that's not entirely true.
New Zealand's waterways are far from 100%fresh and pure and it's been at a decline for decades.
The dairy industry is said to cause most of it as cow urine runs into the water because we have too many cows and don't know what to do with it.
2/3rds of our rivers are too polluted to swim in water pollution is now NZ's top environmental issue and in 2016 Havlock North in Hawks Bay was poisoned by their own drinking water.
the 3 main contaminants of water are bacteria, sediment and nutrients like nitrate the only way we know to reduce nitrate levels in water is by reducing dairy farming.

- Drives agricultural tourism and electricity.
- Ancestor, treasure, and life force in Maori culture
- Factories, farms, etc discharged waste into the river
- From where it starts it begins clear and through its flow downstream the water gets dirty and contaminated
- Bacteria (E.coli), sediment makes water brown, muddy, nutrients (Nitrogen and Phosphorous), wastewater adds these elements
- Farming is a major cause of this

The documentary explains that NZ actually has very polluted waterways, mainly due to the dairy industry's rapid expansion in the last fifteen years and the waste products from its cows. Two thirds of NZ's rivers are too polluted to swim in and half of our lakes are irreversibly damaged. It covers the debate about a new irrigation that could have disastrous ecological consequences on the already very polluted Toki Toki river, and a local election that could have lasting ecological consequences on the entirety of the country. The lobbyists for this dam claim that it won't pollute the river and will actually help it by filtering out phosphorus to stop algae blooms, but scientists argue that this will not be enough. Besides, the finances concerning the project are already big red flags: first the water was way too expensive for any farmer to buy, so they halved the water price, which meant investors ditched the project. Thankfully a local election led to a majority antidam local council, which led to a moratorium being placed on the dam. More water in the River means that it is better for the hábitat. 
Excess nitrogen and  phosphorus in the water causes algal blocs which kills all the living things, living in it. 
The professor investigates the potential damages to the dams. 
Reducing the numbers of coas that we have in nz can help with lowering the phosphorus levels in the Rivers. 
Professor dick believes that the amount of pollution can be controles.  
The councillor enforced a limit of how much of nítrates can  be discharged.

Waikato river 
The River helps shape and define our landscape.
Waikato is one of nzs most industrial river, it used to be a really contaminated River when the public would through their waste intp the River.  
There is 2 sections of the River. 
One sections is conectes to the beaches and goes straight out there, the other part is in the water dams. 
The apperance of the River. 
When it leaves tapo it is clear and Green, by the time it remaches hamalton it becomes Green and murky. By the time it gets to Waikato it becomes very murky andf turns brown.
It is mainly caused by bacteria, sediment, nutrients (Nitrogen and phosphorus)
In different parts of the River are more or less important.
