“The Power of Interdependence and Decentralization” explores the ways in which individuals and collectives connect and work together on a deep level. In Holding Change, author Adrienne Maree Brown emphasizes the importance of decentralized decision-making and interdependence as a model for enhancing group resilience and creativity. She invokes the metaphor of “fractals” to illustrate how individual behaviors reflect and influence the health and functioning of the whole. Decentralization is not about giving up authority, but rather redistributing power so that everyone has the opportunity to participate, resulting in more inclusive and sustainable structures.

Through the exhibition, we will explore how decentralization inspires creativity and demonstrates the essential power of interdependence. Through artwork, images, and interactive experiences, visitors will understand how mutual support and collaboration in diverse communities can lead to holistic growth and change.

This work expresses the idea of decentralization in the form of abstract networks and flows. The intertwining lines and overlapping layers symbolize the energy of collaboration and interconnected communities, reflecting how decentralized systems can function harmoniously without a single central authority.

The work employs both abstract and figurative styles to explore the theme between interconnectedness and individual independence. The paintings use patterns resembling DNA strands to symbolize the roots of decentralized systems in human life and nature. The vibrant colors and intertwining lines in the paintings demonstrate the complex, intertwined relationships that build resilient communities.

This work highlights the fact that in a decentralized society, even if we appear to act independently and individually, we are in fact always deeply influenced by other people and our environment. Schlossberg uses different elements to create art that reminds us to remain sensitive and aware of our interdependence, even when we are “pretending” or protecting ourselves.

After participating in this exhibit, I hope that viewers will recognize that each of us is part of a larger network. The exhibit demonstrates the power of collaboration, sharing, and decentralized decision-making, reflecting on how we find strength by supporting others in the midst of social change. As curator, I hope to stimulate reflection among viewers: how do we practice interdependence in our own lives or communities? And how does this practice help us face uncertainty and challenges?

Interdependence does not mean dependence, but finding strength through mutual support; decentralization does not mean disorder, but giving every voice a chance to shape the future. Through the exhibition, I expect visitors to gain a deeper understanding of this concept and bring it into their own life practices.

This work is an evocative artwork exploring the delicate balance between individuals and their reliance on one another. Known for his nuanced portrayal of human vulnerability, Barrios often uses figures in contemplative or precarious poses to symbolize interconnectedness and shared experiences. This painting likely continues his tradition of emphasizing emotional resonance through a minimalist palette and stark contrasts.

It is a poignant painting that symbolizes themes of interconnectedness, resilience, and the shared human condition. Drawing from his personal history as a Holocaust survivor, Bak uses surreal imagery to depict fragmented, intertwined structures that evoke a sense of vulnerability and strength. The work suggests that individuals and communities are inextricably linked, relying on one another for support, survival, and meaning.

The connection between decentralization and the natural environment is explored. This work may demonstrate the concept of decentralization through natural materials and organic forms, suggesting a decentralized way of distributing power and resources. In art making, plants such as silver thatch and palms often represent the power of nature and complex ecological relationships, and may symbolize a natural state of decentralization and interdependence within social structures.
