Padlet Entry #1: Description of Book

The Glass Castle is a story about the author Jeannette Walls and her family. At a young age, her parents failed to care for her and they were in constant poverty, and Jeannette had to learn how to care for herself. Her family moves around a lot to find a place to settle. In the beginning of the book, it describes where she lived in a trailer in Arizona. Her father was an alcoholic and he is always getting in trouble and it taught Jeannette a lesson on how not to act. They had to eventually leave Arizona and move to Virginia because of her father's problem with alcohol, and they hoped that he would find a new path there and start over. They end up hating Virginia, it becomes unbearable for them and the Walls children realize that they need to branch out and leave their parents in order to be successful and begin a life for themselves instead of moving around and trying to stay out of trouble constantly with their parents.
Mrs. H says:
You have read more than I thought. I know many students who like this book because it provides a different perspective on life. When I lived in NYC I would see people going through the trash bins all the time--it was so sad, but maybe some people prefer to live with no material attachments.

1.) If you could choose a character from the book as a friend, who would it be, and why? I would choose to be friends with Rose Mary Walls because even though she may be selfish, she would be a good person to surround myself with because she is a positive person and always looks on the bright side of life.
2.) If your family moved to the place where the book is set, would you be happy about it? Why or why not? The main place where the book takes place is West Virginia, where Jeannette spends most of her childhood. I would be happy if I could live there because I actually used to live in West Virginia for 7 years before my mom moved us to Ohio. I think it would be nice to live there because all I remember from there is happy memories from my childhood.
3.) Do you know anyone who reminds you of a character in the book? Explain who that is (name can be withheld) and explain why they are similar to the character. Jeannette Walls reminds me a lot of my mom because in the book, Jeannette wasn't cared for a lot as a child and she had to learn how to fend for herself. My mom had a similar childhood, her parents didn't provide a lot for her and she really struggled growing up because they never helped her with anything and that taught her independence.
4.) What is something you've learned by reading the book? If you think you haven't learned anything, think again. It doesn't have to be academic learning. What have you learned about people or situations? What have you learned NOT to do? This book is a good example of perseverance. People in this world have to try hard to be successful in this world and most of the time you either sink or swim. Jeannette had to learn the hard way how to be successful. Due to her lack of support from her parents, she learns that the world is dangerous and that the younger you learn how to take care of yourself, the better you will turn out.

"One time I saw a tiny Joshua tree sapling growing not too far from the old tree. I wanted to dig it up and replant it near our house. I told mom that I would protect it from the wind and water it everyday so that it could grow nice and tall and straight. Mom frowned at me. 'you'd be destroying what makes it special", she said to me.' 'Its the Joshua tree's struggle that gives it beauty' (Walls, 38)." Her mother painted variations of the Joshua tree when she was in midland, and she also conducted research about the tree. She believes that a tree doesn't have to be perfectly tall and straight and she thinks that the imperfections is what makes it beautiful. This quote is important to the characters because it describes her artistic views and it goes along with her character. The overall message of the quote is that perfect isn't always beautiful and sometimes the flaws in a person is what makes them beautiful and unique. Everyone is different, and if everyone was perfect and the same there would be nothing special or beautiful about it.
