(p.18-19)

"Ros (cutting his fingernails): Another curious scientific phenomenon is the fact that the fingernails grow after death, as does the beard." (p.18)

The curious and scientific phenomenon is the idea that fingernails and the beard grow after death. Stoppard builds on this motif of how Rosencrantz is intuitive, as well as how incomprehensible the world is through the character of Guildenstern. It is significant becomes is (because it) jmf exemplifies how death is inevitable. The play also becomes an "intellectual battle" for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern as they try to grasp occurring events in a world, where events defy reasoning and the idea of Existentialism, where things occur without cause.
