It was released on August 14th. It is a visual concept album, focusing on the main character, "Crybaby". Martinez has stated that this character is somewhat of her alter ego, and she named her Crybaby because that was the nickname she was teased about when she was a kid. SPIN named the album number 22 on their list of "25 Best Pop Albums of 2015". Melanie hired one of her fans that always sent her fan art to illustrate the album's 'storybook' for her, so whenever you buy the vinyl or the CD, it comes with a full storybook and there's an illustration for each song. A lot of people think they are creepy, strange, and dark, which is why they are so popular and rack up views. Her first music video ever, which was also written and created by her, went viral, and has now recently hit 100 million views. Other popular music videos are Carousel and Pity Party. She usually writes, directs and conceives most of her music videos, which I think makes her stand out from other artists. Usually other artists hire somebody to write and direct a music video and they just star in it, but Melanie's visuals are very important to her. She also does the wardrobe herself and sometimes creates the sets and does all the makeup. She has created a music video for almost all the songs on her debut concept album, 'Crybaby', except the last song on the album, Mad Hatter. My personal favorite is the 'Mrs. Potato Head' music video, which is what I have linked below.
