The protagonist of The Rifle is Byam. This is a Historical fiction book because its in the Revolutionary war. Cornish is not the protagonist because he is not the one causing the conflict with the British. Byam also uses and fights the British with the rifle. Byam is the protagonist because he changes with the rifle in his hands. Gary Paulsen wanted Byam because they wanted a brave character with a heart for guns so he would see the gun in the shop

Theme

The theme of the book The Rifle is that, Fate will take you where it wants you. I believe this one of the themes because that the rifle was symbolizing "fate" in the book and was controlling where fate wanted the dynamic characters to be. The people that just had the rifle didn't change with the rifle so nothing happened to them because they didn't care about the rifle.

The setting in the book The Rifle is in the 1768 to 1993. You can tell because the rifle is a front loader or musket and the book explained that you can't see if it is loaded unless you measure the barrel length but only some knew this trick. Also, the war that Byam was in was the revolutionary war. You can also tell by the patriotism and British soldiers.

The conflicts in the book The Rifle are character vs group, and also character vs fate. I feel this way because Byam and fought against Britain with the patriots. Also we are learning about the revolutionary war in Social Studies. Character vs fate is in the book because the rifle is making everyone fate different. The rifle lead Cornish to death for selling it to Byam. In fact the rifle does lead Byam going to war and dying from drinking bad water.

The Exposition in the book The Rifle is the begining of the book and ends before Byam trades his rifle and some furs for Cornishs' rifle. I feel like this because the begining explains Conishs' personality while he is making the rifle. Also the rising action come in when Cornish shoots the gun and he's nervous that the gun won't shoot good.

The antagonist in the book The rifle, can be both British and the Patriots because they both are causing conflict for the opposing side. In the other hand the rifle could be the antagonist because the rifle caused people to die and that effected everything in the future and their familys.

The Dynamic Characters are all the main people in the book like Cornish, Byam, and Richerd. They are all dynamic characters because they all changed when they had the gun. Cornish was more protected of the gun and he changed the way how to make then gun and learned. Byam changed and decided to go to war and he change to be more careful by staying at longer distance because of the rifle. Also Richard change because his dad loved the gun and he was having a great life.
